Van Phuc Silk Village: From Traditional Heritage to World Craft Village

Van Phuc silk village (Ha Dong district) is one of the oldest silk weaving villages with over 1,000 years of age.

The craft village is shaped and famous far and wide for the high skills of its craftsmen as well as its long-standing weaving tradition.

Through the ups and downs of time, Van Phuc silk still retains its traditional beauty and Van Phuc village is always at the forefront of the silk weaving industry. The products here are loved for their durability and delicate, elegant beauty.

Vice President of Van Phuc Silk Weaving Village Association Tran Thi Ngoc Lan assessed: “Joining the network of creative craft cities in the world is both an opportunity and a big challenge for Van Phuc silk village, forcing production units to innovate, create, and improve quality to reach the world level. Joining this network, Van Phuc silk village will have the opportunity to exchange and learn from the experiences of units around the world to improve its products.”

“To meet this strong transformation, Van Phuc silk village needs to have a larger production scale and a display area for typical products to promote, preserve and develop the traditional and core values of the thousand-year-old craft village,” said Ms. Lan.

The silk production process in Van Phuc village is basically done manually, requiring the carefulness and meticulousness of the maker to ensure product quality.

Van Phuc has many types of silk, but the most famous is veined silk. This type is made entirely from silk, harmonious, elegant, bringing warmth in winter and coolness in summer to the user.

The difference of silk is in the weaving method, completely by hand, so it requires highly skilled workers.

9 / 14 Representing one of the families with many generations of silk weaving in Van Phuc village, artisan Nguyen Thi Tam (owner of Trieu Van Mao silk production facility) shared: “We are happy and excited that local silk products have reached the world level. We have applied science and technology to some production stages to create many new designs to meet consumer needs and increase efficiency, saving labor.”

Ms. Van added that the village's production process still retains the typical details of Van Phuc brand silk, thereby preserving traditional quintessence while being able to develop and integrate.

Visiting and shopping at Van Phuc silk village, Ms. Phung Bich Diep (Tay Ho district) said: "I really like the silk products here because they have a traditional beauty that very few places have. Van Phuc silk products bring users a feeling of comfort and high durability."

“I hope that in the near future, Van Phuc silk village will have more space to display new products as well as more professional and attractive tourism products to serve domestic and international tourists,” said Ms. Diep.
