>>> Expectations from Bat Do bamboo shoots
>>>Bamboo shoots in Bat Do have a good harvest and good price, Tran Yen farmers are excited
For many years, Bat Do bamboo has become a key crop bringing high economic efficiency and stable income to many households in Tran Yen district. Thanks to planting Bat Do bamboo, many families in Kien Thanh, Hung Khanh, Hong Ca communes have escaped poverty, have food and savings, built spacious houses, and become rich from their homeland.
In 2024, thanks to good cooperation with processing enterprises, the purchase price of Bat Do bamboo shoots is stable and higher than previous years, so Bat Do bamboo shoot growers in Tran Yen district are excited. From the values that Bat Do bamboo shoots have brought, in 2025, Tran Yen district plans to plant 200 new hectares. However, after reviewing in some localities, the registered area for new planting has reached over 350 hectares.
To ensure seed sources for people to plant in the spring crop of 2025, from the end of 2024, the Steering Committee for planting Bat Do bamboo shoots of the district has reviewed and inspected communes with large Bat Do bamboo areas such as Kien Thanh, Hung Khanh, Hong Ca... to develop specific plans to exploit seed tubers to ensure standards and quality to hand over to households with land areas registered for new planting.
Mr. Dinh Trung Ha - Head of Tran Yen District Forest Protection Department said: In 2025, Tran Yen district set a target of 350 - 400 hectares of Bat Do bamboo shoots. Since the end of 2024, the District Forest Protection Department has consulted with district leaders to direct localities to prepare land for bamboo planting and build 2 tree nurseries in Hung Khanh and Luong Thinh communes. These two tree nurseries have been assessed, evaluated and granted certificates of meeting standards by the Provincial Forest Protection Department, providing them for planting in the spring crop this year. In addition, these two nurseries also provide a quantity of seedlings to people in the districts: Van Chan, Van Yen, Luc Yen to plant in this spring crop".
In Viet Hong commune, Tran Yen district, taking advantage of favorable weather, people in the commune have gone to the forest to plant Bat Do bamboo shoots. Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Ban Din village said: "My family has converted more than 1 hectare of ineffective forestry trees to grow Bat Do bamboo shoots. Bat Do bamboo shoots have become a commodity, and there is a bamboo shoot processing factory in the district, so my family decided to switch to growing bamboo shoots to develop the family economy."
"The people in the commune are very excited and proactively registered for new planting areas. They proactively prepared the land and cleared the vegetation to be ready to plant Bat Do bamboo shoots in the best time frame. The People's Committee of the commune will direct the people to concentrate on planting, striving to complete the entire area in March. According to the plan, this year Viet Hong commune was assigned to plant 20 hectares of Bat Do bamboo shoots and is expected to complete in March 2025, bringing the total bamboo shoot area of the commune to nearly 70 hectares" - Chairman of the People's Committee of Trieu Khanh Thien commune said.
Bat Do bamboo has been associated with Tran Yen district since 2003. It can be affirmed that this crop is very suitable for the farming conditions of the people. The district has identified this as a crop that increases income for the people, especially those in ethnic minority areas. Through active propaganda and mobilization, people have gradually converted low-efficiency crop areas such as Acacia, Bodhi and mixed gardens to grow Bat Do bamboo.
Up to now, the whole district has over 4,000 hectares of Bat Do bamboo shoots harvested, gradually turning this crop into the largest commodity area of Yen Bai province with 10 communes planned as concentrated growing areas. Every year, this crop yields over 30,000 tons of commercial bamboo shoots, with each hectare of Bat Do bamboo shoots earning people over 50 million VND, and for highly intensive farming areas, it can reach 70 - 80 million VND. Bat Do bamboo shoots have brought a prosperous life to thousands of people in highland communes and ethnic minority areas.
Vice Chairman of Tran Yen District People's Committee Nguyen Duc Mau said: Currently, with the formation of a value chain in production, Bat Do bamboo shoots are becoming a key crop, not only a crop to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty but also a crop that has enriched many households. To create a linkage model in bamboo shoot development, the authorities of the communes have mobilized the establishment of cooperatives, creating a "bridge" between enterprises and farmers in purchasing and consuming agricultural products. Bamboo shoots grown and harvested by the people are all consumed. The main purchasing units are: Van Dat Company Limited, Yen Thanh Joint Stock Company in joint venture with YAMAZAKI Vietnam Company Limited.
In the coming time, the district will continue to promote propaganda and mobilize people to convert ineffective crops to bamboo shoots; support people with part of the cost of seeds and fertilizers to help people gradually change their production thinking, bringing high economic efficiency in sustainable agricultural development and creating many jobs for local workers.
