In recent weeks, the prices of many types of rice in the Mekong Delta have continuously increased. Farmers harvesting late summer-autumn rice in the Mekong Delta have been able to sell their crops at good prices, and people are very excited.
Currently, the 2024 autumn-winter rice crop of farmers in Can Tho City and many provinces in the Mekong Delta, although just entering the stage of heading, flowering, greening and preparing to ripen, has many traders and businesses placing deposits to buy at good prices.
Rice prices increase
Rice prices in the Mekong Delta have increased by at least 200-1,200 VND/kg compared to the last weeks of June and early July 2024. The price increase is due to a sharp decrease in the supply of commercial rice compared to before the Mekong Delta entered the end of the 2024 summer-autumn rice harvest, while the autumn-winter rice crop has not yet entered harvest.

Rice exports continue to have many advantages, recently the prices of many types of exported rice have improved compared to previous months. In recent weeks, the export price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam has reached 575-579 USD/ton, 25% broken rice is at 539-547 USD/ton.
According to the Vietnam Food Association, by the end of July 2024, our country had exported 5.299 million tons of rice, with a value of 3.34 billion USD, an increase of 8.3% in volume and 27.65% in value over the same period in 2023. It is expected that rice exports this year will reach over 7 million tons as planned.
In many localities in the Mekong Delta (such as Dong Thap, An Giang, Tra Vinh...), recently, farmers have sold fresh rice from the 2024 summer-autumn crop to traders and businesses at prices ranging from 8,200-8,800 VND/kg for fragrant rice varieties Jasmine 85, Dai Thom 8 and OM 18. Fresh rice varieties IR 50404, OM 380 and OM 5451 from the 2024 summer-autumn crop have been sold by farmers in many places at prices of 7,400-8,200 VND/kg.
Thanks to high prices for rice, summer-autumn rice farmers in many places can achieve profits of 2 million VND/acre or more.
Mr. Nguyen Si Hien in Long Thanh hamlet, Phu Thanh A commune, Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province, said: "My family has just harvested 3 hectares of OM 18 rice in the summer-autumn crop of 2024, with a yield of nearly 6 tons/cong, fresh rice sold for 8,500 VND/kg, making a profit of about 2.7 million VND/cong. Although the rice yield this crop is not high, thanks to selling at a higher price than the previous winter-spring crop, I still achieved a profit level almost equal to the winter-spring crop. I am currently preparing to sow the autumn-winter crop and really hope that the rice price will continue to remain high in the future."
According to Mr. Hien, in the summer-autumn crop of 2024, many local farmers' rice fields can yield 6-6.5 tons/cong and sell at high prices, from which she can also earn a profit of 3-3.5 million VND/cong, especially for areas with 2 rice crops per year. Areas with 3 rice crops per year often have lower yields.
Towards a successful autumn-winter rice crop
The high price of rice has created much excitement for farmers in Can Tho City and many provinces in the Mekong Delta, helping them confidently look forward to a successful autumn-winter rice crop.
Can Tho is a locality that has completed harvesting the 2024 summer-autumn rice crop quite early in July 2024. At this time, the autumn-winter rice crop in the city is mainly in the stage of heading, flowering, and green maturity, and some areas are about to ripen. Currently, many autumn-winter rice crops in the city have also been deposited by traders to agree to purchase at a higher price than the same period in previous years.
Farmers in many districts of the city said that many traders are asking for deposits to buy fresh rice varieties OM 34, OM 5451 and OM 18 at harvest time at prices ranging from 7,200-8,600 VND/kg.
Mr. Huynh Van Gioi in Truong Xuan commune, Thoi Lai district, said: "This autumn-winter crop, my 14 hectares of rice were sown with OM 34 variety. The rice has passed the green firm stage and is ripening, and is expected to be harvested on September 8. In the last days of August 2024, many traders asked to deposit to buy OM 34 rice at prices from 7,200-7,300 VND/kg or more. However, because I took the deposit to agree to sell rice quite early in July 2024, the price was lower, only 7,000 VND/kg. However, the price of 7,000 VND/kg is also 200 VND/kg higher than the previous autumn-winter crop.
Hopefully, when the harvest season comes, rice prices will not decrease but continue to increase or stabilize. From there, traders will come to buy rice quickly, helping farmers limit risks when ripe rice is left in the field for a long time."
According to Mr. Luu Quang Dinh in Thanh Phu commune, Co Do district, in the 2024 autumn-winter crop, his family has 3 hectares of OM 5451 rice. The rice grows quite well and has few pests and diseases, and is likely to yield 700-800 kg of fresh rice per hectare (large range). Recently, OM 5451 rice has been purchased by traders in many places at 7,700-7,800 VND/kg, and in some places the price has even reached 8,000 VND/kg. With this price, farmers growing autumn-winter rice are confident that they will achieve good profits.
In recent times, the rice export situation of our country has continued to have many advantages, creating conditions for farmers to sell rice at good prices. However, the situation of rice prices decreasing when entering the peak harvest season is still likely to happen, especially when the purchasing, drying, processing and storing capacity of small traders and enterprises in many localities is still limited.
Therefore, in the coming time, the functional sector needs to continue to pay attention to supporting farmers and businesses to promptly overcome difficulties and limitations. Timely and synchronously deploy many solutions to stabilize product output and develop the sustainable rice industry. In particular, it is necessary to strengthen market information work, support farmers in production linkage and connect with consumption units and businesses to promptly harvest and consume autumn-winter rice.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City, farmers in Can Tho have planted 68,521 hectares of autumn-winter rice for the 2024 crop, reaching 108% of the plan, 290 hectares higher than the same period last year. Currently, 3% of the autumn-winter rice area is in the tillering stage, about 80% of the area is in the panicle-forming to flowering stage, and about 17% of the area is in the green-firm stage, with good growth and development.
