According to the latest data, China has returned to its position as the world's leading pork producer in 2024, accounting for 46% of total global pork production, surpassing the US and Spain.

After a sharp decline in the pig herd due to African swine fever, China has regained production capacity through rapid farm rebuilding. China’s pork output is expected to reach 56.8 million tonnes in 2024, approaching the record set in 2014.

The US and Spain will take second and third place, with 12.7 million tonnes and 4.8 million tonnes respectively, followed by Brazil, Germany and Russia.

China is also the world’s largest consumer of pork, consuming more than five times as much pork each year as Americans.

Despite being the world's largest pig producer, China still has to import about 1.9 - 2 million tons of pork every year. The main pork suppliers to China are Spain, Brazil, Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States.

In February 2025, the price of live pigs in China fluctuated continuously. Specifically, the price of live pigs in this billion-people market decreased by 3.4% to 15.2 yuan/kg (equivalent to 53,200 VND/kg) on February 22, but recovered to over 16 yuan/kg (equivalent to 56,000 VND/kg) by the end of the month.

Overall, the price of live pigs increased by 5.5% to 16.6 yuan/kg (equivalent to 58,100 VND/kg) over the previous month.

Over the past 10 years, countries that have continuously increased pork production include Spain (up 34.4%), Brazil (up 32.2%) and the US (up 22.3%). In contrast, pork production in Germany decreased by 23.2% and Poland by 12%.

The top 10 pork producing countries account for more than 75% of total global pork production.

According to the USDA, pork production growth is expected to be low through 2025. Global pork supplies are likely to remain stable, with annual growth below 1%. Meanwhile, pork demand is expected to increase in North America and Brazil, where beef supplies are tight.

Europe may see seasonal price increases, while Asia sees price volatility, with downward pressure in China and South Korea, but strong price increases in Japan and Southeast Asia.

According to a report by the Department of Animal Husbandry (now the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine), citing data from the US Department of Agriculture, in 2021, 2022 and 2023, Vietnam ranked 6th among the countries with the highest market share of pork production in the world, accounting for 2.4% (2021), 2.5% (2022) and 3% (2023) of total global pork production, respectively.

Among the 10 largest pork consuming countries in the world, Vietnam ranks 6th with a pork consumption/production ratio of 105.4% (domestic pork production only meets 95% of pork consumption demand).

According to data from the General Statistics Office, in the period of 2019 - 2023, the livestock structure of our country is as follows: pig farming accounts for 60 - 64%; poultry 28 - 29% (of which, colored chickens 11%, white chickens 11%, geese, ducks 7%) and the rest are buffalo, cows, goats, sheep (accounting for 9%).

Meanwhile, in the structure of world meat production in 2022, pork accounts for 41%, poultry meat 37% and buffalo and beef meat (22%). Thus, Vietnam's pork structure is about 20% higher than the world average.
