In 1954, to protect the Dien Bien Phu stronghold, the French army mobilized 10 tanks, of the M24 series, set up many artillery positions and received air support.
On May 7, 1954, the Dien Bien Phu campaign was completely victorious. Our army destroyed 8 tanks and captured 2 intact.
Currently, the remains of 8 tanks, planes, and artillery positions are still preserved and maintained at relic sites in Muong Thanh field, A1 hill, and around the De Castries bunker command post...
Ms. Pham Thi Thao, deputy director of the Dien Bien Provincial Relic Management Board, said that these artifacts are currently under the management of the board and the Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum.
"Every year we still inventory the artifacts, preliminary preservation plans, and chemical preservation are carried out to maintain the longevity of the relics. Most of the artifacts located outdoors have had roofs installed by the management board for preservation and periodic maintenance," Ms. Thao shared.
This tank was destroyed by the 753rd and 755th 75mm artillery companies, the 675th artillery regiment and the 802nd 105mm artillery company of our 45th artillery regiment on April 23, 1954. The tank's wreckage is currently located near the runway of Dien Bien airport.
Right next to it is a stele recording the victory of our army in the battle at Muong Thanh airport from April 24 to 29, 1954.
The wreckage of the Bazeille tank was destroyed by Company 674, Battalion 251, Regiment 174, Division 361 on the morning of April 1, 1954 on the top of Hill A1 and is still located at this special relic site.
