Poet, musician, and music researcher Nguyen Thuy Kha , author of the anti-American poetry collection “The Time of Blue Blood,” passed away on March 13 in Hanoi at the age of 77.
According to information from the Vietnam Writers Association, he had been battling cancer for a while.
Poet Nguyen Quang Thieu, Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association, said that poet Thuy Kha lived the way he wanted, wrote the way he wanted and played the way he wanted. He was able to live as himself and this is not easy for most people.
Poet Nguyen Quang Thieu wrote these farewell lines: “I don’t think about ending his life. I think he has finished his wandering in this world and gone to another place with other jobs. That’s why his departure doesn’t leave me with a heavy feeling even though from tomorrow there will be no more chance to drink with him, listen to him read poetry and sing.”
Poet Nguyen Thuy Kha was born in 1949 in Thai Binh, his hometown is in Ngai Am village, Hoa Binh commune, Vinh Bao district, Hai Phong. The first song he composed for his high school, “Thai Phien School Self-Defense March,” is still famous today. He graduated from the University of Information Technology in 1971, joined the army and worked in the Information Corps until 1990. He worked as a signalman across Truong Son, experiencing fierce fighting years in Quang Tri citadel, Zone 5 and the Central Highlands.
He studied at Nguyen Du Writing School from 1979-1983, actively working in many fields from literature to music, cinema and journalism. He has published over 15 poetry collections, 10 memoirs on literature and art, on poets and musicians, of which the most prominent are “Van Cao - the man who walks along the sea”, “Half a century of Vietnamese modern music”, “The faces of the century music”, “Huy Du - life and music” …
One of his most famous works is the poem “Untitled,” which, although only four lines long, has been memorized by many generations: “Taking my lover to my ex-lover’s house/ Falling in the midday rain/ Suddenly feeling myself split into two halves/ Half wet now, half wet in the past.”
In addition, he is also the author of several music collections, portrait film scripts, and commentary on dozens of films.
He was awarded the Literature and Arts Newspaper Poetry Prize 1981-1982; Le Quy Don Prize 1986; Nguyen Binh Khiem Prize 1982; Vietnam Musicians Association Prize continuously from 1996-2005; Prize of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations in 2004; State Prize for Literature and Arts (2023).
