On the afternoon of March 12, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung had a meeting with the General Director of Ericsson Group - Mr. Börje Ekholm. Ericsson is the world's leading corporation in telecommunications infrastructure solutions, with about 100,000 employees, doing business in more than 180 countries.
Ericsson began providing telecommunications equipment in Vietnam in 1991, then opened a representative office in 1993. The group is currently providing equipment to four Vietnamese mobile network operators, including coordinating 5G commercial trials.
After reporting to the Minister on some experiences in network deployment, especially the commercialization and exploitation of the benefits of the 5G network, General Director Börje Ekholm affirmed that Ericsson will promote cooperation with Vietnam to develop telecommunications infrastructure.
At the reception, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung highly appreciated the contributions of Ericsson Group to the development of Vietnam's telecommunications infrastructure over the past 31 years.
Sharing with the leaders of Ericsson Group, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said that Vietnam's focus is on digital transformation. To promote digital transformation, it is necessary to develop digital infrastructure, while the construction of digital infrastructure is mainly done by network operators. Vietnamese network operators need Ericsson's experience in building digital infrastructure, transforming from traditional telecommunications companies into technology companies.
This year, Vietnamese network operators will simultaneously commercialize 5G nationwide. Through 5G deployment, Vietnam wants to develop applications for industries, thereby developing the digital economy and increasing labor productivity.
For the past 10 years, operators have been looking for revenue growth opportunities, including 5G deployment. Ericsson could hold a workshop to share how to increase revenue when deploying 5G commercially as well as new business models.
The Ministry of Information and Communications supports Ericsson in cooperating with universities to build labs for students to access technology and develop new applications.
Emphasizing the potential of Vietnamese people in math and STEM subjects, the Minister of Information and Communications also suggested that Ericsson open a research and development (R&D) center in Vietnam to develop products for the global market.
Vietnam is considering some digital platforms as a type of infrastructure, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung expects Ericsson to continue participating in the process of building digital infrastructure and developing the digital economy in Vietnam.
“ Ericsson’s participation in Vietnam’s digital infrastructure in the coming time will have important changes. For example, new platforms, industrial applications, or cooperation with network operators will not only be in the form of selling equipment but also in researching and developing applications and platforms together ,” said Minister Nguyen Manh Hung.
In response to the Vietnamese side's comments, Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm said that the Ministry of Information and Communications' direction on focusing on developing 5G applications is very correct. This is also a good opportunity for Vietnamese developers and application programmers to bring their products to the global market.
According to Mr. Börje Ekholm, Ericsson highly appreciates Minister Nguyen Manh Hung's suggestions for further cooperation with Vietnamese universities. Training high-quality human resources in Vietnam to serve research and development is also something Ericsson is interested in and looking for.
At the end of the working session, the head of Ericsson Group once again affirmed his commitment to accompany Vietnam and wished to cooperate more closely with government agencies and domestic enterprises.
