ABS, short for Anti-lock Braking System, is an active safety feature equipped on many modern cars. When this system is active, the front and rear sensors of the wheels will collect information and send it to the ECU controller. If it detects that the wheel is at risk of locking, the ECU will adjust the pressure applied to the brakes by opening/closing the oil valve, preventing the wheel from locking.
When the ABS light stays on, it is a sign that there is a problem with your vehicle's anti-lock braking system. Here are some checks and troubleshooting steps you can take.
Car ABS warning light is on
Check handbrake
First, check that the parking brake is fully down. Sometimes the parking brake is not properly down, which can also cause the ABS warning light to come on. Make sure the parking brake is fully down, and check that the warning light goes out.
Check brake fluid level
Low brake fluid levels can reduce the pressure in the ABS system, resulting in poor braking performance. Check the brake fluid level and top up if necessary. This helps ensure that there is always enough fluid pressure in the system for the ABS system to function properly.
Check brake fluid hose
On vehicles equipped with ABS, the brake fluid lines are divided into two circuits: one for the front wheels, one for the rear wheels. If one of the two circuits leaks, the oil pressure will decrease and the ABS warning light will come on. Check the oil lines carefully to detect and fix it promptly.
Check ABS sensors
The ABS system operates primarily on signals from speed sensors located on the wheel hubs. With the humid and rainy climate in Vietnam, these sensors are susceptible to damage from moisture, dirt or mud. Check and clean these sensors to ensure they send accurate signals to the ECU.
Restart the car
After checking and cleaning the sensors, turn off the engine and restart the vehicle. If the ABS light remains on, the system may need further inspection.
Take the car to the garage
If the ABS warning light is still on after performing the above steps, you should take your vehicle to a reputable garage or service center for a thorough inspection and repair. There may be more serious problems related to the ABS electrical system or ECU.
