Amid complicated tensions in the Middle East, ABC News on October 16 quoted US officials as saying that forces under the US Central Command (Centcom) have conducted many airstrikes targeting Houthi weapons storage facilities in areas controlled by these forces in Yemen.
Meanwhile, NBC news agency quoted Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin as saying that these facilities have been reinforced and contain many types of weapons that the Houthis use to target civilian and military ships across the region.
This is the first time the US has used B-2 bombers, also known as stealth bombers, in airstrikes against Houthi forces in Yemen.
In another development, the US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on a Lebanon-based financial network that transferred millions of dollars to the Hezbollah Islamist movement.
The US Treasury Department announced sanctions on October 16 against three individuals linked to Hezbollah's financial arm and four companies based in Lebanon that were registered to conceal their ties to the group.
The US also sanctioned three individuals involved in the production and trafficking of amphetamine (known as the synthetic drug Captagon), which Washington has accused of financing Hezbollah. Acting US Treasury Undersecretary Bradley T. Smith said the sanctions were aimed at preventing Hezbollah’s destabilizing influence in Lebanon and across the region.
