After a shocking "war of words" at the White House on February 28 with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a speech late on March 5: "Today, the teams of the two countries have started working on the upcoming meeting. We are seeing momentum progress."
However, the leader did not specify the time or location of the upcoming negotiations.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine, Mr. Yermak, wrote on X: "I had a phone call with the US National Security Advisor (Mike Waltz). We have scheduled a meeting for our teams in the near future to continue this important work."
The next steps “towards a just and lasting peace” were discussed, according to the Ukrainian official.
The statements came a day after President Zelensky expressed regret over the outcome of his February 28 meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House and affirmed his desire to resume negotiations as soon as possible.
In a call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on March 5, Mr. Zelensky reaffirmed: "We all want a safe future for our people. Not a temporary ceasefire, but an end to the conflict once and for all."
According to the leader, with coordinated efforts and "American leadership, this is absolutely achievable." Agreeing with this assessment of the Ukrainian President, outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz affirmed that President Donald Trump plays a key role in negotiations with Russia.
During the phone call, Mr. Scholz also welcomed the Ukrainian President's goodwill in participating in negotiations at the earliest possible time and agreed with the view of quickly achieving a ceasefire and lasting peace for Ukraine.
