(CLO) US President Donald Trump delivered an important speech before Congress on Tuesday evening, declaring "America is back" and pledging to pursue tough policies on immigration, economy and foreign affairs.

Mr Trump declared to Congress that his administration would work to restore American sovereignty, and promised that this term would mark the most glorious period in the nation's history. In his speech, Mr Trump emphasized: "America is back" and "the American dream is resurgent".

The 100-minute speech – the longest in modern history by a president to the US Congress – marked a strong return for Mr Trump after he took office for a second time in January this year.

Foreign policy: Negotiations with Ukraine and Russia, cutting military aid

One of the highlights of Trump’s speech was the situation in Ukraine. He revealed that Kiev was ready to sign a major mineral deal with the US, which would give Washington access to strategic resources such as lithium, nickel and rare earths. This is seen as a move to reduce US dependence on China in the industrial and energy sectors.

Mr Trump also stressed that Ukraine had expressed a willingness to resume peace talks. However, the Trump administration’s decision to halt all military aid to Kiev has raised concerns among NATO allies. Many Democrats criticized the move, saying it could weaken Ukraine’s defenses against Russia.

On Moscow's side, Mr. Trump affirmed that he had "serious discussions" with the Russian government and received "strong signals" that the Kremlin was ready to negotiate peace. He did not give details about any conditions that Russia might demand during the negotiation process.

In addition, Mr. Trump once again affirmed his desire to buy Greenland. He painted a prosperous and secure vision for the autonomous Danish island, pledging that if Greenland joined the United States, its people would be richer and more developed than ever.

"We will keep you safe, we will make you rich, and together we will take Greenland to heights you have never thought possible," Trump declared to applause from Republican lawmakers.

Mr. Trump emphasized that Greenland is a territory with a small population but a very large area, playing an important role in the US national security strategy. With its location on the shortest route from Europe to North America, Greenland is considered a key element in Washington's ballistic missile warning system. "We really need it for world security," Mr. Trump emphasized.

Immigration Policy: Increased Deportations, Continued Border Wall Construction

Mr. Trump spent much of his speech emphasizing measures to tighten immigration control, pledging to launch "the largest deportation campaign in American history."

He announced that his administration is increasing funding for the deportation of illegal immigrants, while continuing to build a wall on the border between the US and Mexico.

According to Mr. Trump, millions of illegal immigrants flooded into the US during the term of former President Joe Biden, causing a rise in crime and pressure on the economy. He asked Congress to quickly approve additional funding to complete the remaining part of the border wall, warning that he would use executive power if Congress did not cooperate.

Economic policy: Strong tariffs on China, Mexico, Canada

Mr. Trump continued to emphasize his trade protectionist policies, announcing a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, while increasing tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%.

These moves have immediately met with reactions from the countries involved. Canada announced that it would impose retaliatory tariffs on more than $100 billion of US goods, while China imposed retaliatory tariffs on a series of US agricultural products, and Mexico is expected to announce countermeasures by the end of the week.

Trump also pledged to reduce inflation and help Americans cope with rising living costs. He criticized the Biden administration for rising prices, noting that egg prices had risen sharply over the past year, becoming a symbol of inflation under the previous administration.

Congressional response: Republican support, Democratic opposition

Mr Trump's speech received strong support from Republicans, many of whom stood up to applaud and chant "USA! USA!" throughout the speech.

In contrast, many Democratic congressmen expressed their opposition, some holding protest signs and even leaving the hall before the speech ended.

Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat, delivered a rebuttal speech shortly afterward, criticizing Mr. Trump on foreign policy and trade, and recalling former President Ronald Reagan’s role in the Cold War.

Ms. Slotkin warned that cutting aid to Ukraine could weaken America's standing internationally, and expressed concern that Mr. Trump's new tariffs could hurt the domestic economy.
