Posting on social network X , President Mulino emphasized that “once again, President Trump is lying” about the canal, while denying that the important waterway is in the process of “recovery”, as discussed in the talks between him and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held in early February.

After criticizing President Trump's statement as insulting, the head of the Panamanian government stressed that cooperation between the two governments requires a clear understanding of issues of mutual concern, as has always been the case. President Mulino reaffirmed that the Panama Canal belongs to Panama and will continue to belong to this Central American country.

Earlier, speaking before Congress, President Donald Trump emphasized that to further strengthen national security, the US government would take back the Panama Canal and the US has begun to do so. In January, Mr. Trump declared that he did not rule out the possibility of using force to gain control of the 80km-long canal connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

In another development related to President Trump's territorial claims, on the same day, Greenland Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede declared that "Greenland is ours" and cannot be taken or bought, despite a message from US President Donald Trump, suggesting that the US would acquire the territory "one way or another" although his administration supports the Arctic island's right to self-determination.

"We do not want to be Americans, or Danes; we are Kalaallit. The Americans and their leaders must understand that. We are not for sale and cannot be easily taken over. Our future will be decided by us in Greenland," Egede was quoted as saying by VOA.

Mr. Egede’s post, written in Greenlandic and Danish, and later updated in English, came hours after Mr. Trump made a direct appeal to the people of Greenland in a speech to both houses of the U.S. Congress on the evening of March 4, a week before the islanders go to the polls in congressional elections.
