Other victims of the attacks included U.S.-based Chinese dissidents focused on promoting human rights and religious freedom in mainland China, a missionary organization, a Hong Kong newspaper, and diplomatic missions from India, South Korea, Indonesia, and Taiwan, according to the DOJ.
Eight employees of a Chinese company called Anxun Information Technology Co. Ltd (also known as i-Soon) and two officials from the Ministry of Public Security have been indicted in New York for their involvement in the hacking of email accounts, mobile phones, servers and websites from 2016 to 2023.
“For years, these 10 defendants — two of whom we allege were government officials — used sophisticated hacking techniques to target religious organizations, journalists, and public officials, all with the goal of collecting sensitive information for use by the Chinese Communist Party,” attorney Matthew Podolsky said in a statement.
A separate indictment was also announced in Washington against Yin Kecheng and Zhou Shuai, alleged members of the “APT 27” hacking group, also known as “Silk Typhoon,” which targeted US-based technology companies, research groups, law firms, defense contractors, local governments, health care systems and universities.
The US State Department has offered a $2 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Yin and Zhou, who are believed to be in China.
