Reuters news agency reported that on the evening of March 4, in a speech to Congress, President Trump painted a picture of prosperity and safety for the people of Greenland - an autonomous territory of Denmark that he once expressed his intention to annex into the United States.
Speaking to reporters, the Danish Foreign Minister said: "President Trump said that the US administration respects Greenland's right to self-determination and I think that was the most important part of that speech."
In addition, the head of Danish diplomacy also affirmed that Copenhagen and Washington share security interests in the Arctic, therefore: "We are ready to cooperate with our American friends to achieve that, but of course it must be based on the fact that we have a Kingdom of Denmark".
Polls show that a majority of Greenlanders oppose annexation by the United States, although a majority support future independence from Denmark. Meanwhile, the Danish government has said that Greenland must decide its own future and that the territory is not for sale.
Regarding this issue, on March 5, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian reaffirmed that Beijing resolutely adheres to the principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter in international relations.
Mr. Lam Kiem stated: "Regarding the Greenland issue, China has always held that relations between countries should be handled in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter."
