(CLO) The number of Americans applying for British citizenship is set to hit a record high in 2024, with applications surging in the fourth quarter – coinciding with the re-election victory of US President Donald Trump.
According to data from the UK Home Office, more than 6,100 US citizens applied for citizenship in 2024, the highest number since 2004, when just under 3,000 people applied for citizenship.
The number of applications is also up sharply from 2023, when fewer than 5,000 Americans applied that year. In particular, in the last three months of 2024 alone, there were more than 1,700 applications – the highest level in any quarter in the past two decades.

Analysts say the surge is linked to Mr Trump's first term and changes in tax policy, mainly coming from Americans who have lived in the UK for a long time.
Alistair Bambridge, partner at Bambridge Accountants, once commented that apart from dissatisfaction with the US political situation, an important reason why many people renounce their citizenship is the tax burden.
While many Americans are scrambling for British passports, some Britons are looking for “backup passports.” Since the 2016 Brexit referendum, the number of Britons applying for Irish passports – which allow them to work, live and travel freely within the EU – has nearly doubled.
Some European communities are also taking advantage of the wave of American anxiety following Mr Trump’s re-election last November. An Italian village has launched a website aimed at Americans looking to emigrate, offering cheap housing to attract new residents.
“Are you tired of global politics? Want to pursue a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities?” the website promotes. “It’s time to start your European escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia.”
