According to CNN, the US Department of Justice announced that authorities arrested an Afghan man on charges of plotting to carry out a terrorist attack on presidential election day (November 5, 2024) on behalf of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).
Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, was arrested on October 7 in Oklahoma and charged with providing material support to IS. The US Justice Department said Tawhedi was arrested while taking steps to liquidate family assets, purchase AK-47 rifles and ammunition to carry out a terrorist attack in the US.
Tawhedi is suspected of planning the attack with a teenage Afghan citizen, identified as his brother-in-law.
Tawhedi began communicating with an IS recruiting account on the social network Telegram in August this year and discussed how to use guns.
Tawhedi also admitted to planning to sell his assets in the US and then return to Afghanistan with his wife and children. He said he planned to carry out “violent attacks” targeting crowded places. Both Tawhedi and his co-defendant intended to “die as martyrs.”
According to the criminal complaint, Tawhedi entered the United States on September 9, 2021, on a special immigrant visa. FBI sources said he needed a computer for his gun business and was interested in purchasing two AK-47 rifles and ammunition. Ahmad Tawhedi faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted of conspiracy and providing material support to ISIS.
