The achievement is based on analytics data from Appfigures, which shows growing user interest in the new social networks amid CEO Elon Musk's many changes to X.
Threads app is gaining traction among users
Since Musk took over Twitter for $44 billion, rebranded Twitter as X, and made several significant changes to the platform's operations, the public has watched with concern about the possible demise of the popular microblogging site.
Musk’s puzzling changes have also helped spawn new services like Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon, which are trying to attract users looking for an alternative to X. And according to the latest data from analytics firm Appfigures, the Threads platform is breaking into the top spot in terms of downloads.
Since its launch in July 2023, Threads has rapidly attracted more than 100 million users in less than a week. The majority of Threads downloads came from Google Play, with around 600,000 from the App Store. Although interest in the platform has declined rapidly since then, with engagement down 70% by the end of the month, Threads’ daily downloads have remained higher than X’s, which began to decline slightly during the same time period.
However, by December, Threads downloads began to rise again and remained high, while X showed much more modest results. Over the past three months, Threads has doubled and sometimes tripled the installs of X, cementing its lead over its competitors.

It's worth noting that daily app downloads are an indicator of user growth, and an established platform like X naturally attracts new users more slowly than a new service like Threads, since millions of people already have the app installed on their devices. However, recent financial reports from both companies show that Threads has surpassed X's active user base by 25% in less than a year.
An analysis conducted last fall found that X’s scores fell across all rankings after a year under Musk. In early 2024, Fidelity, one of X’s major investors, valued the company at 70% below the price at which Musk bought it in 2022.
