On May 11, the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) said that massive flash floods caused by rain since May 10 in northern Afghanistan have killed more than 330 people and destroyed or damaged thousands of houses.
IOM's emergency response chief, citing figures from the Afghan National Disaster Management Authority, said 300 people were killed and 1,500 homes destroyed or damaged in northeastern Baghlan province alone. Badakhshan, Ghor and Herat provinces were also hit by flash floods and heavy damage.
Rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas and are rushing to rescue injured and trapped people, officials said. Afghanistan is vulnerable to climate change due to its relatively dry winters, which make it harder for the soil to absorb rainfall. After four decades of war, the country is ill-prepared to cope with the consequences of global warming.
