The fruit is known as "caviar"

Among the agricultural products imported into China, the rich people of this country always look for a type of lemon with a strange name and shape. That is the finger lemon. What is so special about this fruit that they are so fascinated by and hunt for?

Finger lime, also known as salmon roe lime, has the English name finger lime (scientific name Microcitrus australasica) is a flowering plant in the citrus family, and is one of six native Australian lime species.

Finger limes have an elongated, cylindrical shape about 10cm in diameter, and come in many eye-catching colors, from light green, dark green, bright red to reddish brown.

This fruit grows in the eastern coastal rainforests. The finger lime tree has different external characteristics from other orange and lemon varieties. The tree has a straight trunk, grows in bushes and has an average height of 10m. The leaves are smaller than other lemons, the branches are soft, the thorns are quite large, and it is suitable for living in tropical environments. This tree species is resistant to pests and diseases, so it is extremely easy to care for.

Finger limes are elongated, cylindrical in shape, about 10cm in length, and come in many eye-catching colors, from light green, dark green, bright red to reddish brown. Inside are lime segments shaped like caviar or salmon eggs, with a sweet and sour flavor that goes well with seafood.

According to some research experts, this lemon species appeared 18 million years ago, becoming an endemic species of Queensland and South Wales, Australia.

This can be considered the most special fruit in the citrus family, not only does it have a different shape, but the lemon segments inside also look very different from regular lemons.

Finger lime peels are green or red. The pulp looks exactly like caviar. Many people call them the “caviar of the lime family” because of this resemblance.

According to experts, the flavor of finger lime is what makes it different. The flavor of finger lime is a combination of yellow lemon and regular lemon, very suitable to eat with fresh seafood dishes such as sushi or sashimi.

The fruit sought after by the rich

Despite its uniqueness, the finger lime was once nearly extinct due to humans. That was when Europeans arrived in Australia in the 18th century. Many, many finger limes were cut down to make room for agriculture and livestock, causing the species to almost become extinct.

Fortunately, some trees remain in the National Park, so today the fruit is rare and not widely available on the market.

Compared to regular lemons priced at around 30,000-35,000 VND/kg, finger limes cost around 3.5-3.6 million VND/kg, which is around 100 times more expensive than regular lemons . It is estimated that this price is almost equal to half a tael of SJC gold.

In China, this agricultural product must be imported and is usually sold at 1,100 yuan/kg (more than 3.6 million VND/kg). In Vietnam, people can order it from abroad and the price is often up to 3.5 million VND/kg.

Although the price of this imported fruit is much higher than usual, finger lime is still the most sought-after commodity in China.

According to Sohu, the Chinese rich do not care about this expensive price. They think that finger limes have high nutritional content and are very good for health.

Because they are related to oranges and lemons, finger limes contain high levels of vitamins C, E, A, potassium, folate, and antioxidants. In fact, research shows that a finger lime contains 3 times more vitamin C than a tangerine.

Because of its rich vitamin C and E content, finger lime is very good for boosting immunity, preventing skin aging, stimulating collagen, reducing blood pressure and iron deficiency.

When preparing grilled or fried seafood, people often sprinkle this fruit on top to help enhance the flavor of the dish and help the body metabolize nutrients when eating seafood optimally.

Some dishes use finger limes for decoration:
