On December 4, 2024, the 19th Conference of the Intergovernmental Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage officially issued a Resolution to inscribe the "Via Ba Chua Xu Sam Mountain Festival" on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The organization of the ceremony to receive the UNESCO certificate inscribing the Via Ba Chua Xu Festival of Sam Mountain as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity and the opening of the Via Ba Chua Xu Festival of Sam Mountain aims to honor, propagate and widely promote the heritage values of An Giang to the people and tourists. To raise awareness of the domestic and international community about the cultural, historical values and significance of the Via Ba Chua Xu Festival of Sam Mountain. Through that, to enhance the responsibility of all levels, sectors and localities in the work of preserving and promoting the values of the representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity. To promote the historical and cultural values of the land and people of An Giang, affirm the rich cultural identity of the Kinh, Hoa, Cham, Khmer ethnic communities..., introduce typical local products, and promote sustainable tourism development.
Comrade Le Hong Quang, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee, emphasized that the fact that the Ba Chua Xu Festival of Sam Mountain was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is the international community's recognition of the unique values of the Festival in terms of history, culture and spirituality. For the Party Committee, government and people, this is a priceless reward, affirming the integrity, authenticity and outstanding global value of the heritage. It helps the community that owns the heritage to be more fully aware of the value of the festival in the treasure trove of intangible cultural heritage of the nation, thereby enhancing pride, sense of responsibility, and moving towards practical measures to preserve and promote the value of the heritage.
The Secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee affirmed that An Giang province will continue to implement well the heritage protection policies in accordance with its commitment to UNESCO, ensuring the originality of the system of rituals, limiting commercialization, and preserving the natural landscape of the Sam Mountain area. At the same time, promoting propaganda activities, raising awareness of the whole society, especially the young generation, on the protection and promotion of heritage values; exploiting the potential and values of heritage in a sustainable manner, closely linked with environmental protection, preserving the original cultural space, so that each visitor coming to the festival will not only experience a special spiritual space but also feel the rich, diverse, and unique Southern culture.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh emphasized that the ceremony to receive the UNESCO certificate recognizing the Via Ba Chua Xu Festival on Sam Mountain as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity is an honor and pride not only for the Party Committee, government and people of An Giang province but also for the whole Southern region and Vietnam. The event is a recognition of the persistent efforts of generations in preserving and promoting the cultural and religious values of the Via Ba Chua Xu Festival on Sam Mountain. Over the past 200 years, the worship of Ba Chua Xu has become an important spiritual support for millions of people, not only in the South but also throughout the country. The festival not only shows respect for Ba Chua Xu - who is honored as the Mother Goddess of the land, but is also a symbol of the Vietnamese Mother worship, contributing to creating the national cultural identity.
On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his hope that international organizations, especially UNESCO, will continue to accompany Vietnam in preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, spreading the quintessence of national culture in the flow of human culture.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the Via Ba Chua Xu festival on Sam mountain was recognized by UNESCO at a special time, right after the 15th National Assembly passed the revised Law on Cultural Heritage and the investment policy for the National Target Program on Cultural Development for the period 2025 - 2035. This demonstrates the strong commitment of the Party and State in protecting and promoting cultural heritage, making culture an important resource in the country's sustainable development.
To continue preserving and promoting the value of the Ba Chua Xu Festival on Sam Mountain, the Deputy Prime Minister requested the Party Committee, government and people of An Giang province, together with relevant ministries, departments, branches and localities, to focus on protecting the cultural space of the heritage, ensuring harmony between conservation and development, and preserving the sacred landscape of Sam Mountain. Preserving traditional rituals, ensuring originality and solemnity, so that future generations can continue and feel the sacred value of the festival. Raising public awareness of the value of the heritage through education and propaganda, so that every citizen and tourist participating in the festival understands and appreciates this unique cultural identity.
The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that the Via Ba Chua Xu Festival on Sam Mountain not only enriches the culture imbued with Vietnamese national identity, but also contributes to raising Vietnam's position on the world cultural map. At the same time, he expressed his belief that, with the joint efforts of the government and people, this heritage will continue to develop strongly, becoming an important endogenous strength, contributing to the prosperity and civilization of the country.
At the ceremony, representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the National Action Program to protect and promote the value of the intangible cultural heritage of the Sam Mountain Lady Festival.
