Cold air hits, the North has rain and cold

Due to the influence of the Northeast monsoon, followed by additional cold air, the weather forecast for the Northern provinces is that from the evening and night of January 20, the weather will turn cold. From January 22, the weather will turn severe cold over a wide area.

Discussing more about this cold spell, Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that it is likely to be strong and have a very wide impact.

“The Northern and North Central regions are mainly affected by cold air, so there will be widespread severe cold. The Northern region is likely to have rain from January 20 to 22, making it feel very cold. In addition, the Northern and North Central regions, the area from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai, under the influence of cold air, will also have rain, some places will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms. Thus, it can be said that this strong cold air will affect the entire Northern region as well as the Central region,” said Mr. Lam.

Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, commented on the cold air mass that will hit this weekend.

At sea, under the influence of cold air, the Northeast wind in all three regions of the North, Central and South of the East Sea, including the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa island districts, has strong Northeast wind and rough seas.

Mr. Lam also shared that the Great Cold is one of the 24 solar terms of the year. Each solar term lasts about 2 weeks. The Great Cold is a period of time that lasts from January 20 or 21 to February 4 or 5. Similar to the division of seasons: spring - summer - autumn - winter or months from 1 to 12. Each season, each month or each solar term has a different climate characteristic, with a probability of occurrence of over 50%. With the Great Cold, the climate is often colder than other solar terms. Therefore, the occurrence of severe cold during the Great Cold period is completely normal.

“With the upcoming cold spell, due to the very strong intensity of the cold air, we believe that the lowest temperature in this cold spell in mountainous areas is likely to drop below 7 degrees, and in high mountainous areas it could drop to approximately 0 degrees. The plains, including the capital Hanoi, are likely to drop to 8-10 degrees. According to weather information in Hanoi, the temperature could drop to 5-6 degrees, which is also a possible scenario, but at the moment. This is not the highest possibility,” Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam shared.
