Naming a locality is a heavy and important task.

After the merger of provinces, the selection of new names for localities is an issue that is of interest and discussion to the people. In particular, opinions from cultural experts and tourism businesses especially emphasize that naming localities after the merger requires careful consideration between cultural, historical factors and practical development.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son - Full-time member - National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Society, naming a new province or city in Vietnam must follow principles that both ensure historical continuity and reflect the spirit of development in the new period. Because a name is not only an administrative title, but also a symbol of community cohesion, arousing people's pride and creating a unique mark for the locality on the cultural, economic and social map of the country.

Talking to reporters of the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Mr. Pham Hai Quynh - Director of the Asian Tourism Development Institute - also expressed that our Vietnam has had mergers and separations over time, but has still developed and the homeland is still there, the people are still there and the local economy is still growing. And, we often say, culture is the source of the nation, as long as culture exists, the nation exists, so hopefully, the new names of the localities will not lose the cultural identity of each land and people.

In terms of national interests, in an interview with a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, Mr. Le Cong Nang - Chairman of the Board of Directors of WonderTour International Travel Joint Stock Company - emphasized that my grandfather and many people strongly support the policy of merging provinces and streamlining the administrative apparatus. "I was born in Nam Dinh, although the name Nam Dinh may disappear, the Tran Temple festival, the Vieng fair, the belief in Saint Tran, the Chau Van tune... are still there and go hand in hand with the historical process of the country" - Mr. Nang said.

However, according to Mr. Le Cong Nang, naming a new locality after the merger is a heavy and very important task. For example, looking at history, the case of the three provinces of Nam Dinh, Ha Nam and Ninh Binh was merged into Ha Nam Ninh in 1975, then split into Nam Ha and Ninh Binh in 1991, then Nam Ha continued to split into Nam Dinh and Ha Nam in 1996, showing the complexity of naming.

Naming a locality is not only a matter of representing a land but also a matter of honoring culture and history. In the case of the three provinces of Nam Dinh, Ha Nam and Ninh Binh, we need to carefully consider factors such as history, cultural heritage and even the aspirations of the people, ” said Mr. Nang.

Analyzing more clearly, Mr. Le Cong Nang said that, for example, Ninh Binh started from the capital Hoa Lu, Nam Dinh is associated with the Tran Dynasty, and Ha Nam is currently showing outstanding economic development. Therefore, a new name needs to be able to represent both the long history and current development. " We can also consider using meaningful historical names, it can be the old name Ha Nam Ninh or Giao Chi or any other name with historical and cultural significance that is recognized by the people" - Mr. Nang suggested.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dat - CEO of AZA Travel - said that after a very long time, we are reorganizing the local administrative apparatus. Therefore, choosing a local name needs to be calculated and considered reasonably to both preserve traditional elements and ensure a new development space. " Naming a locality does not need to be too long, it needs to be concise. In particular, naming after the capital of the locality after the merger should also be an option to consider " - Mr. Dat suggested.

Create consensus

Naming localities after the merger, in addition to carefully considering factors, according to experts, to ensure consensus among the people is extremely important. Because consensus is not only a matter of name but also building trust between the people and the government. This is especially important in the context of our efforts to build a united and developed country.

Mr. Le Cong Nang said that one of the important solutions is to build a broad and public participation mechanism for all classes of people. The government and relevant agencies need to organize forums, seminars, and workshops so that people can express their opinions, and at the same time create opportunities for them to contribute to the decision-making process. Accordingly, relevant agencies need to listen to opinions from a variety of subjects - from cultural and historical researchers to ordinary people - to have a comprehensive and multi-dimensional view of this issue.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son also emphasized that no matter which direction is chosen, the most important thing is to have extensive consultation, listening to the opinions of the people, historical and cultural researchers and managers to ensure that the new name is not only administratively reasonable but also creates consensus, pride and a sense of connection for the people in the region.

A new name must not only be easy to remember and pronounce, but also represent the cultural identity and historical traditions of the locality, which are the thoughts and aspirations of many people. Therefore, the recommendations emphasize that when choosing a new name for the locality, promoting communication to make it clear to the people that the new name is not just a simple change, but also a step towards a sustainable development future.

Regarding this, Mr. Le Cong Nang commented that an effective communication campaign will help people understand that changing the name will not destroy the cultural values they cherish, but on the contrary, will help promote the country's image to the world.

As for localities that are tourist and cultural destinations that already have a brand, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dat said that localities need to quickly start building a systematic communication and promotion plan. " Not only promote domestic but also international communication to increase market recognition of the destination" - Mr. Dat suggested.

Proposing local names after the merger not only shows respect for history but also must be consistent with the country's sustainable development and international integration.
