The last time frost appeared on high mountain peaks such as Phia Oac (Cao Bang), Y Ty (Lao Cai), Ta Xua (Yen Bai) was during the cold spell on January 11, 2025.
Ta Xua, located at an altitude of more than 2,800 m above sea level, is one of the highest mountain peaks in Vietnam, located in Bac Yen district (Son La), bordering Tram Tau district (Yen Bai).
Ta Xua is 240 km from Hanoi, has a cool climate all year round, and is famous as one of the most beautiful cloud hunting spots in the North. "Ta Xua Cloud Paradise" has attracted many domestic and foreign tourists to visit, experience and most importantly, "hunt" the moment of "sea of clouds" covering the mountainside, creating a majestic and impressive natural landscape.
Every year, Ta Xua still has ice, mainly during the winter season, from December to February. This is the first time people have witnessed ice forming in March.

Frost is a phenomenon when water vapor rises, meets cold air on the surface and condenses into tiny ice particles. Frost usually appears from late November to the first half of February of the following year. But it is most common in December and January. However, in mountainous areas above 2,000 m, in the eastern region of Hoang Lien Son mountain range, there are years when the cold is deep and lasts until late February and early March, frost still occurs.
Regarding the cause of formation, frost occurs when the ground temperature drops to 0 degrees Celsius, while the air temperature is still above 0 degrees Celsius.

Frost usually forms around midnight to early morning, when the ground cools the most. Water vapor in the air layer close to the ground in contact with the cold surface cools rapidly, condenses and crystallizes.
The favorable conditions for frost to form are that the sky must be clear at night, with light or calm winds leading to large ground radiation. During the day, frost usually occurs around midnight and lasts until 7-8am the next day, in higher areas it lasts until 8-9am. It will melt completely when the sun is high in the sky.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, due to the influence of the strengthening cold air, on the morning of March 19, the lowest temperature in Sa Pa (Lao Cai), Pha Din (Dien Bien) was 5 degrees Celsius; Sin Ho (Lai Chau), Dong Van (Ha Giang) was 6 degrees; Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai) was nearly 10 degrees Celsius; Hanoi was 16 degrees Celsius. According to the rule, for every 100 m of elevation, the temperature will decrease by about 0.6 degrees Celsius.
