After a period of use, the washing machine needs to be cleaned periodically. This job is quite simple with ingredients that are easy to find at home. You can do it anytime to keep the washing machine clean. Below is a simple and correct way to clean the washing machine.
Clean washing machine with baking soda
Many people often only wipe the outside of the washing machine, but the wet washing drum is where bacteria and mold easily accumulate and grow. Baking soda has natural cleaning properties, so it will remove bacteria. If you just wipe with a normal damp cloth, it will not be able to clean.
Pour warm water into the washing machine with 2-3 cups of vinegar + 250 grams of baking soda. Soak for about 30 minutes, then dissolve the baking soda in the water. Start washing with the longest wash cycle. Then use a dry towel to wipe the inside of the washing machine. This washing machine cleaning method can be applied to both top-loading and front-loading washing machines.
In addition, you can mix baking soda with a little water to create a slightly thick mixture, then dip a damp cloth into the mixture and wipe away stubborn stains on the surface of the machine body.

Clean the washing machine with vinegar
You can clean the washing machine drum with lemon or vinegar - very simple ingredients that any kitchen has. Vinegar is also a natural detergent that helps clean the washing machine.
For top-loading washing machines, first plug in the power cord and fill the drum with water (without clothes). You should choose hot wash to clean the washing machine. When the machine is full of water, add 3-4 cups of white vinegar to the washing machine. For front-loading washing machines, pour vinegar into the drum before the machine starts the washing cycle.
Then put the washing machine on wash mode to let the vinegar penetrate deep into the nooks and crannies of the washing drum, helping to remove any remaining mold stains inside the machine.
Soak the machine for about 30 minutes to 1 hour to remove all remaining dirt. Start the washing machine with the longest washing time. After the washing machine is finished, use a clean cloth dipped in vinegar to wipe the washing machine again. Open the washing machine door to let the inside dry completely.
Clean other parts of the washing machine
In addition to cleaning the outside of the washing machine body and drum, you should clean some other parts of the washing machine such as:
- Laundry detergent and fabric softener tray: Regularly wash and soak the laundry detergent tray with bleach, rinse with hot water and let dry.
- The rubber gasket on the door of the front-loading machine: this is also where bacteria often accumulate. You can use a damp cloth soaked in baking soda to clean this area.
- Drain pipe and water filter: make sure you regularly check this area and replace the drain pipe if it is old and dirty.
Notes on using and cleaning the washing machine
- To maintain cleaning efficiency, you should regularly clean the washing drum and washing machine 2-3 times/month.
- Do not use bleach to soak clothes in the washing machine.
- Do not leave clothes in the washing machine for too long after washing. This will cause bacteria, mold and odor to develop.
- After drying all the clothes, open the washing machine door to let the drum dry and avoid mold.
Regularly maintain and clean the washing machine.
