Dangerous for people with underlying heart disease
Doctor Tran Ba Loc, Department of Cardiology - Geriatrics, Thu Duc City Hospital (HCMC), said that there are many special causes that can lead to the habit of nail biting such as:
- A form of stress relief for anxiety, stress, psychological disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)...
- Teething babies may also develop a habit of biting their nails to relieve the discomfort of teething.
- Imitate others, especially children often imitate their friends.
Previous studies have shown that nail biting may also be linked to genetics or a chemical imbalance in the brain. Some people are four times more likely to bite their nails if they have a family history of nail biting, especially if both parents have it, according to Health .
The risk of nail biting is four times higher if they have a family history of nail biting
Ms. NTTT (26 years old, Binh Duong) shared with Thanh Nien : “I often bite my nails when I am working or thinking about something complicated. This is unconscious and gradually forms a habit that is difficult to break. Some people say that biting your nails a lot can cause heart disease, but I don't see any harm to my body so I don't pay much attention to it."
From here, Dr. Ba Loc stated: “Nail biting is not a direct cause of cardiovascular diseases. However, this habit can cause indirect effects leading to cardiovascular diseases due to bacteria from the nails. They can enter the blood, causing blood infection, leading to endocarditis (infection in the heart valve). In particular, this risk increases when the patient has congenital heart diseases such as atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)...”.
Many other harmful effects and tips to "quit" biting your nails
In addition to cardiovascular disease, the habit of nail biting can cause infectious diseases to be transmitted through the digestive tract, which can then spread to other places, causing dangerous complications throughout the body. In addition, nail infections (cough); finger arthritis; tooth enamel damage; nail deformities that cause loss of aesthetics... are all negative effects caused by this habit.
Additionally, nail biting can cause tissue damage, changing the appearance of the nail, leading to abnormalities such as black or brown discoloration, dents in the nail bed, etc. When biting nails, the skin around the fingers is easily scratched. This creates an environment where bacteria can easily be transmitted from the mouth to the fingers and vice versa, which can lead to skin or stomach infections, according to Health .
Nail biting can also affect your teeth and overall oral health. Studies show that teeth can become chipped and crowded due to the constant pressure of biting down. In some cases, the gums can also become inflamed due to this habit. From there, Dr. Ba Loc suggests some useful tips to help "quit the addiction" of nail biting as follows:
