Laundry service is "in high demand" during prolonged drizzle and humidity

The North is entering days of continuous drizzle, cold weather, high humidity leading to clothes and blankets being difficult to dry after washing, easily having a musty smell. Also during these days, laundry shops in Viet Tri City are having to operate at full capacity, some working until 2am because people's laundry needs are 3-5 times higher than usual.

Because her house has a washing machine, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, Gia Cam Ward, Viet Tri City, rarely takes her clothes to the laundry because she is afraid of the expense. However, due to the prolonged rain and humidity, the clothes and blankets do not dry after washing, and have an unpleasant musty smell, so Ms. Phuong has to take them to a laundry.

“My family is large, with both adults and children, and there are clothes that need to be washed every day. Even though the water is wrung out during the washing process, when hanging them up to dry, the old clothes have not yet dried and a new batch has to be washed, and there is not enough space to hang them anywhere. I have to take some of my daily clothes to the laundry for 15,000 VND/kg, and wash my blankets for 60,000 VND/piece. Although it is expensive, at least the clothes dry quickly, smell good, and avoid mold, which affects the health of the whole family.”

On average, it takes 3 - 4 hours to wash, iron, dry and fold clothes.

These days, both workers and machines are working at full capacity at laundry shops in Viet Tri City, never taking a break.

On humid rainy days, 7 pairs of washing machines at the store of Mr. Ngo Huy Hoang - owner of a laundry shop on Quang Trung Street, Viet Tri City operate continuously, starting from 7 am.

“Since the rainy day, people's laundry needs have increased 3-4 times compared to normal days. Although my family has 1 pair of industrial washing machines (including 1 washing machine, 1 dryer), and 6 pairs of household washing machines, it is still not enough to meet customers' needs. On normal days, the amount of clothes from customers is about 50kg, only needing 2 people to do it, but these days, the amount of clothes is up to 200kg, so we have to mobilize 1-2 more people to help. There are days when we have to work until 2am to deliver to customers on time. Not to mention many strangers who need laundry but the store has to refuse because they prioritize washing for regular customers, if we accept more orders, we will not be able to wash in time" - Mr. Hoang said.

The washing machines at the laundry shop all operate at high capacity to serve customers.

Although drying clothes in the sun makes them smell better, when the weather is not sunny, using a dryer or laundry service is the most effective solution. This method helps clothes dry quickly, limits bacteria, and ensures cleanliness, especially for clothes that need to be used urgently.

At Ms. Chu Thi Tuyet Mai’s laundry shop on Hung Vuong Street, Viet Tri City, it is also overloaded because the number of customers needing laundry has increased 5 times compared to normal days. Ms. Mai said: “The demand for laundry is increasing every day, especially for families with young children or office workers who need clean and dry clothes. To ensure that customers’ clothes are not cross-contaminated, each household’s clothes are washed separately. For customers who need to wash normal clothes, they can bring them in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. As for customers who need to wash blankets, they have to wait until the next day.”

After receiving the clothes from the customer, Ms. Mai will have the staff sort the colored clothes and white clothes and then label the customer's name on the clothes to avoid confusion before putting them in the washing machine for processing. When the laundry is finished, it will be put into the dryer to dry immediately. After that, the clothes are folded and placed in separate bags to return to the customer. On average, it takes 3 - 4 hours to wash and dry the clothes.

Life jackets, wool coats, vests, etc. will be dry cleaned, steam ironed and bagged by shop owners before being delivered to customers.

According to shop owners, people's demand for laundry will continue to increase from now until the end of the rainy season and about a week after that. However, service prices at the shops will not change. Depending on whether customers choose wet cleaning, steam ironing or dry cleaning, prices will vary. For example, men's/women's suits cost from 60,000 - 80,000 VND; jackets, sweaters, down jackets, suede jackets, etc. cost from 50 - 60,000 VND/piece; blankets and sheets cost from 60,000 - 70,000 VND/piece; regular clothes cost from 15 - 20,000 VND/kg on average...
