Money lost, disease carried
Although she was saved by doctors at Bach Mai Hospital after emergency surgery, female patient D.TP (38 years old) is still shocked and scared after experiencing a period of very fragile health just because she believed in the method of detoxifying her body by using coffee infusion to perform colonic enema. Previously, Ms. P. had to go to the emergency room because of severe abdominal pain in the lower pelvis area accompanied by bloody stools, after using the method of detoxifying with coffee enema at a private clinic.
Ms. P. used this detoxification method twice, each time 1 week apart; but on the third time, she felt severe pain in the lower abdomen with bleeding through the anus, so she was taken to the emergency room. Doctor Nguyen Thanh Khiem, Deputy Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery - Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery, Bach Mai Hospital, said that the surgery showed that the patient had a ruptured rectum in the lower third, causing a retroperitoneal abscess. The surgical team sutured the ruptured rectum, drained the retroperitoneal space extensively, and created an artificial anus for the sigmoid colon. After 2 weeks of surgery, the patient was discharged from the hospital, eating and living normally, but will have to undergo another surgery in a few months to close the artificial anus.
Many forums and social networks are spreading the method of detoxifying the body by using coffee enema to flush out waste and toxins from the body, helping to improve health after cleansing. Just a few keywords "detoxify the body by using coffee enema" or "coffee infusion to detoxify the body" on Google or Facebook will give hundreds of thousands of results with specific instructions for this method.
Among them, there are many video clips instructing how to use “specialized” coffee specifically for colon detoxification and then boil it with filtered water. Notably, the application of this method is advertised as only needing to be done at home or private clinics. Along with that, many products and tools for detoxification by coffee enemas are also widely sold online, even labeled by medical facilities.
Lack of scientific basis
According to experts, the digestive tract helps break down and absorb food to provide energy for the body. The digestive tract starts from the mouth, goes through the esophagus to the stomach and then to the small intestine and large intestine. The digestive system helps eliminate waste from food and drink. The elimination process involves the large intestine, also known as the colon, ending in the rectum. Meanwhile, the enema method is to use liquid pumped back from the anus into the rectum, these liquids have the effect of softening the stool. This method is indicated in cases of constipation that are difficult to pass, need to clean the colon for procedures, surgery or some special cases that require enema for diagnosis and treatment.
Doctor Nguyen Thanh Khiem said that injecting coffee into the anus will reduce the stimulation of the rectum, causing the rectal reflex to be lost in the long run. At the same time, the loss of rectal reflex also increases the risk of rectal rupture during subsequent enemas, because the patient no longer feels the urge to defecate. Worse, coffee enemas can cause colitis, pushing the intestinal microflora into an imbalanced state.
“Colonal enema is a treatment method that must be prescribed by specialists and performed at licensed medical facilities,” Dr. Nguyen Thanh Khiem informed; at the same time, he recommended that everyone should protect their digestive system by drinking plenty of water, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, getting 6-8 hours of sleep at night, and especially limiting alcohol, red meat, greasy foods, and exercising regularly to help keep the digestive system healthy.
