Disaster from foolish pranks
On February 10, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital announced that it had just admitted an 18-year-old male patient to the hospital after his friend's prank.
Specifically, a young man (from Ha Giang) worked as a hired hand at a bran milling factory in Van Giang, Hung Yen. While working, his co-worker played a prank on him by using a high-pressure air sprayer (usually used for drying) to press against his anus and spray hard.
After being sprayed, the patient had severe abdominal pain and was taken to the emergency room by friends.
Although he received timely emergency care, to re-establish a natural digestive tract, the young man had to undergo surgery to close the colostomy after another 6 months.
Just because of an excessive prank, a young man at such a young age has to face many risks, affecting his health for the rest of his life.
Also with this prank, at the end of 2018, a 13-year-old patient in Dong Nai had to be hospitalized for emergency treatment after using a wood cleaning blower to blow into his anus.
The pressure from the blower caused the child to have a pneumothorax and ruptured colon. The child also had to have an artificial anus to re-establish a natural digestive tract for the rest of his life.
In addition, one of the popular pranks of students is to prop a pen upside down on a chair for a friend to sit on. In fact, this prank has caused many children to be hospitalized due to injuries.
At the end of 2023, Phu Tho General Hospital also admitted an 8-year-old patient who was hospitalized due to sitting on an upside-down pen because of a joke from a classmate.
In the classroom, the child's friend placed the sharp end of a pen on a chair while the child was preparing to sit, causing the pen to pierce the perineum and perforate the rectum into the abdomen, causing peritonitis.
Fortunately, the child received timely emergency care and the wound was not too severe, so colostomy surgery was not required.
Another case that required emergency hospitalization due to a prank was an 11-year-old child in Quang Ninh. The child had an accident while swinging on a bar, a classmate placed an iron bar right under the child's buttocks, causing the child to fall and the iron bar was stabbed straight into the anus and rectum.
At the hospital, the child was diagnosed with a rectal tear at the sacrum, accompanied by a fracture of the sacral shaft causing air to leak into the spinal canal and retroperitoneal space.
Doctors performed emergency surgery to clean the damaged area, suture the rectal wound, drain the front of the sacrum and create an artificial anus for the child.
Anus - vulnerable part
According to doctors, many rare accidents occur due to children's hyperactivity, mischief, and even foolish pranks. These accidents are mainly accidental, occurring unintentionally but posing many risks, even leaving serious consequences.
Among them, the anus is the part that is easily damaged by strong impact. These pranks cause complex injuries to the anorectal area (skin tears, tearing of the edges, edges of the anal canal or perforation, rectal tears) as well as neighboring organs (urinary, genital, abdominal, colon, small intestine, blood vessels...).
Doctor Tran Thanh Tung, head of the general surgery department at Phu Tho General Hospital, said that wounds in the anal-rectal area are often very complicated and can cause damage to many other organs.
In particular, damage to this part is at high risk of infection because the last part of the rectum is where feces are stored.
To avoid unnecessary accidents from pranks, students should absolutely not play dangerous pranks that can cause serious damage to the body, and not play with sharp objects to limit injuries.
Doctors recommend absolutely not injecting solutions or gases through the anus (especially using high-pressure machines to inject) for playful purposes or any other purpose.
Besides, parents and teachers should also learn more and warn students about the harmful effects of playing dangerous games.
