New research funded by Cancer Research UK, published in the journal Nature Communications, has discovered the miraculous power of a glass of milk a day in preventing cancer.
Scientists from the University of Oxford (UK) examined the association of 97 dietary factors with the risk of colorectal cancer in 542,778 participants, followed for nearly 17 years.
During the study period, 12,251 people developed colon cancer, with calcium emerging as a potential preventive for colon cancer and alcohol as the biggest dietary culprit in increasing risk.
Colon cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the world.
The results found that consuming 300 mg of calcium in the daily diet - equivalent to a large glass of milk (250 ml), reduced the risk of colorectal cancer by up to 17%, according to Cancer Research UK .
The researchers also found that other calcium-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, yogurt, and nut milks had this effect, suggesting that calcium itself plays an important role.
However, the study did not investigate the effects of calcium supplementation.
Conversely, the results also showed that drinking alcohol every day can increase the risk of colon cancer by 15%. In addition, processed meat and red meat also increased the risk.
Nutritionist Janet Cade, professor at the University of Leeds (UK), although not involved in the study, also said: This study provides important evidence that overall diet can affect the risk of colorectal cancer.
Absorbing 300 mg of calcium in your daily diet - equivalent to 1 large glass of milk (250 ml), helps reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by up to 17%.
Lead author Dr Keren Papier, senior nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, explained that calcium may protect against bowel cancer by reacting with bile acids and free fatty acids, creating a harmless “soap” that prevents them from damaging the gut lining.
Other studies have shown that calcium helps balance and strengthen the immune system, while reducing the ability of tumors to invade, according to Cancer Research UK.
Calcium rich foods
According to the health news site Healthline , calcium can be absorbed from both plant and animal sources. In addition to dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt, which are especially rich in calcium, calcium-rich foods are also abundant in nuts such as almonds, chia seeds, sardines, canned salmon, anchovies (because the bones can be eaten), beans, green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, kale, spinach, soybeans and tofu.
