Vietnam's 'pearls' are in high demand in Southeast Asian countries, and businesses have signed huge export orders. Thanks to that, our country has earned more than 4 billion USD.
According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, as of mid-September this year, Vietnam exported nearly 6.5 million tons of rice of all kinds, earning 4.06 billion USD. Compared to the same period last year, rice exports increased slightly by 6.2% in volume but the value increased sharply by 21.2% (equivalent to an increase of 710 million USD). Regarding the export market, the product considered as a "pearl" of Vietnam is very popular in Southeast Asia, with the 3 largest customers being the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia as of the end of August. Specifically, the largest customer, the Philippines, spent nearly 1.72 billion USD to buy 2.81 million tons of rice from Vietnam in the past 8 months. Compared to the same period last year, Vietnam's rice exports to this market increased by 19.6% in volume and 39.8% in value.
Indonesia has continued to increase its purchase of Vietnamese rice since last year. In just the first 8 months of 2024, this Southeast Asian country bought nearly 913,900 tons of rice, equivalent to 557.8 million USD. Vietnam's rice exports to Indonesia increased by 27.3% in volume and 54.4% in value over the same period in 2023. Notably, our country exported nearly 582,900 tons of rice to Malaysia, earning 345.9 million USD. Rice exports to this market skyrocketed by 112% in volume and 152.8% in value over the same period last year. The large increase in rice purchases has made Malaysia Vietnam's third largest rice export market, surpassing China. Our country's average rice export price in the first 8 months of this year reached 625 USD/ton, up 14.8% over the same period last year. According to data from the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), on September 17, the export price of 5% broken rice in our country reached 565 USD/ton, 25% broken rice was priced at 535 USD/ton, 100% broken rice was priced at 455 USD/ton. Experts and rice exporters said that it is very difficult to forecast rice prices in the last months of the year. However, prices will hardly decrease because the supply for export is not much left. According to statistics, if the amount of rice exported is equivalent to 2023, that is, in the remaining 3.5 months of 2024, our country will have about 1.5 million tons of rice left for export. Not to mention, the North recently had more than 200,000 hectares of rice flooded, damage caused by storms and floods also affected the supply of this item.

Meanwhile, some countries in Southeast Asia still have a need to buy large quantities of rice, the source of goods targeted is Vietnam. For example, the Philippines plans to import about 1 million tons of Vietnamese rice. Recently, Indonesia - the second largest customer of Vietnamese rice, has just announced a tender for nearly half a million tons of rice in September, requesting to receive goods in October and November this year. This market has a demand to buy 5% broken white rice produced in the 2023-2024 crop year (milled for no more than 6 months). The rice must originate from Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Pakistan. Mr. Do Ha Nam - Vice President of VFA - said that domestic rice prices have increased continuously over the past week. In addition to the impact of storms and floods on supply, businesses have also signed very large export orders and are having to buy rice to pay their partners in the last months of the year.Rice sprouts white like bean sprouts, farmers suffer losses of 3,000 billion VND At the conference on Supporting the recovery of crop production after storms and floods in northern provinces and cities on the morning of September 18, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung said that the recent storm and flood had flooded more than 200,000 hectares of rice, causing losses of about 3,000 billion VND. Localities are continuing to compile statistics and review to have specific figures. "Storm No. 3 caused severe damage. Many rice growing areas had not been harvested yet, were flooded, sprouting white like bean sprouts," Mr. Trung shared. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has proposed technical solutions to overcome and restore crop production after storms and floods. At the same time, it has gone to localities to guide, support and advise farmers to take advantage of cleaning the fields and draining water to prepare for early winter planting. According to the Department of Crop Production, localities need 15,000 tons of rice seeds to restore production. However, the amount of rice seeds in the national reserve is only over 4,000 tons. |
