(CLO) Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree appointing Mr. Alexander Nikitich Darchiev as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to the United States, and concurrently serving as Russia's permanent observer at the Organization of American States in Washington.
"[I issue this decree] appointing Mr. Alexander Nikitich Darchiev as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the United States of America and permanent observer of the Russian Federation to the Organization of American States in Washington," the decree published on Russia's official legal information portal stated.
With his extensive experience, Mr. Darchiev is expected to play an important role in reshaping Russia-US relations during this turbulent period.

Darchiev’s appointment comes amid signs of a thaw in US-Russia relations after years of tensions. In February, during a meeting between officials from the two countries in Saudi Arabia, Moscow and Washington reached an agreement to speed up the appointment of bilateral ambassadors.
Last week, Washington formally approved Mr. Darchiev at another meeting between the two sides in Türkiye. The six-hour meeting in Istanbul aimed at restoring normal operations at the two countries’ embassies marked an important step forward in bilateral relations.
Mr. Darchiev, 64, is a veteran diplomat who served two terms at the Russian Embassy in Washington and served as ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021. The position of Russian ambassador to the United States has been vacant since October 2024 when his predecessor, Anatoly Antonov, left office.
The appointment of the new ambassador comes amid a dramatic shift in US foreign policy. President Donald Trump recently halted military aid to Kiev and opened direct talks with Moscow after a verbal spat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. The move sent shockwaves through Kiev and its European allies, raising concerns about Washington’s new direction in the Ukraine conflict.
