Prime Minister convenes leaders of Mekong Delta provinces to discuss rice exports

On the morning of March 5, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired an online Government meeting with 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region.

The meeting assessed the socio-economic situation in February and the first two months; national target programs; public investment disbursement; growth targets... At the meeting, the Prime Minister summoned leaders of provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region to discuss the situation of rice production, consumption, and export; and the implementation of transport infrastructure projects in the southern region.

Opening the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that at this time, there is a lot of work, while the world situation is changing rapidly, complicatedly, and unpredictably. Strategic competition is increasingly fierce. Some countries are adjusting trade policies, especially tax policies, affecting import and export, while the world economy is still facing difficulties and recovering slowly.

The Prime Minister also requested leaders of ministries, sectors and localities to assess and analyze the context and situation in March and the coming time. Emerging issues and Vietnam's policies to continue maintaining macroeconomic stability, promoting growth and controlling inflation.

In particular, it proposed key leadership, direction and management priorities for the coming time so that growth must reach at least 8% by 2025. The Prime Minister noted specific issues in direction and management, such as the rice market situation, monetary policy, fiscal policy, interest rate management, public investment disbursement, tax issues, fees and charges to support businesses, etc.

Reporting at the meeting, Minister of Finance Nguyen Van Thang said that the socio-economic situation in the first two months achieved many positive results, better than the previous month and the same period last year; people, businesses, domestic and foreign investors, financial institutions, international credit rating organizations... increased their confidence in the economic prospects.

The average consumer price index (CPI) for the first two months increased by 3.27% over the same period. State budget revenue reached 25.4% of the estimate, up 25.7% over the same period.

Import-export turnover in the first two months increased by 12% over the same period, of which the trade surplus was estimated at 1.47 billion USD. Total registered FDI capital was over 6.9 billion USD, up 35.5% over the same period; realized capital reached nearly 3 billion USD, up 5.4%.

Previously, on March 4, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed Official Dispatch No. 2, directing a number of solutions to prevent rice prices from plummeting. In the first months of 2025, global rice trade has been complicated, and world supply has become surplus. Import demand from countries around the world has decreased, with no signs of recovery in the short term, and major import markets are cautious in stockpiling and purchasing rice.
