The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced the sample questions for the 2025 high school graduation exam, including literature. The sample questions consist of two parts: reading comprehension (4 points) and writing (6 points). The writing part includes a literary essay (2 points) and a social essay (4 points).
Students are free to create and express their opinions.
The reading comprehension section consists of 5 small questions set up according to the matrix: recognition, understanding and application. The content of the questions follows the genre characteristics, including both Vietnamese knowledge and practical connections.
The literary essay question requires candidates to write a paragraph (about 200 words) clarifying the characteristics of a mythological character from the given text The Rain God . To answer this question, students need to grasp knowledge of literary knowledge, which is the character in mythology.
The social argumentation question raises the question: Life often has difficulties and challenges; facing them or giving up is each person’s choice. The question requires candidates to write an argumentative essay (about 600 words) expressing their opinions on the difficulties and challenges facing young people.
The beauty of social argumentation lies in the way it poses the problem and requires students to discuss a problem that is close and practical to young people - the difficulties and challenges in life. Students are free to be creative and express their own opinions as long as they are reasonable.

In general, the sample exam structure shows that the question content has a wide coverage of the program, meeting both requirements of the exam: obtaining graduation exam scores and university admission. The sample exam structure eliminates the sample essay compared to the current high school graduation exam (literary argumentation question).
Many literature teachers believe that the argumentative essay on a social issue raised in a literary work is reasonable because it is impossible to ask students to write a literary essay on a work that has only been read for a few minutes. The exam using two texts ( Mtao Gru's Victory and Than Mua ) is unnecessary and not concise.
Instead, some teachers suggest that the writing part should be integrated into the reading comprehension part so that students will have more time to read the material and will be less confused. Specifically, the literary argument question will ask as follows: Please write a paragraph (about 200 words) clarifying the characteristics of the epic character from the text Victory of Mtao Grự. As for the social argument question, candidates may be asked to write an essay (about 600 words) expressing their opinions about heroes in today's era.
Many teachers wish that in the writing section, candidates can choose one of two questions: social argumentation or literary argumentation. The social argumentation question is suitable for all students and has high differentiation. As for the literary argumentation question, only good and excellent students who love literature can do well on the test.
In addition, some teachers are still wondering about the sample exam answers. Accordingly, the reading comprehension section, question 2 requires candidates to list some words and images describing the village space, which is too easy, almost giving zero points (0.5 points).
Along with that, asking candidates to point out the difference between the rhetorical devices of comparison (double comparison and simple comparison) through two given sentences is no different from a puzzle. Knowledge of rhetoric is inherently difficult and there are many controversies in the professional community, so the question does not necessarily have to go into academics. It is reasonable to just ask candidates to state the effects and effectiveness of the rhetorical devices.
Stop guessing questions before the exam date
Teacher Do Duc Anh, Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), commented that the new exam format will minimize rote learning and learning from sample texts.
Specifically, the reading comprehension section has 5 questions at 3 levels: 2 recognition questions, 2 comprehension questions, 1 application question. The writing section (text creation) is also divided into 2 parts: literary argumentation and social argumentation, but is reversed from the old style of writing a literary argumentative paragraph and writing a social argumentative essay.
In the writing section, the literary argumentation has a sharp decrease in score (only 2 points) because there is a test of literary knowledge in reading comprehension and the requirement of this section also depends on the genre characteristics of a specific work. The social argumentation section only requires students to have awareness of social issues and writing skills to easily solve the requirements of the topic.
Mr. Duc Anh said that the illustrative exam for literature subject following the structure and format of the high school graduation exam from 2025 clearly demonstrates the innovation in teaching and assessment according to the 2018 general education program.
"The most noticeable thing is that the requirements of the exam closely follow the requirements that need to be achieved according to the genre characteristics of the new program. The sample exam still retains the format of 100% essay, testing all reading comprehension and writing skills. From now on, the situation of guessing questions will end," said this teacher.
