BHG - Actively converting corn land to vegetable and flower growing land and exploiting the potential to build a commodity agricultural model, Tung Vai is becoming a bright spot in economic development in the border communes of Quan Ba district. Tung Vai is one of the five border communes of Quan Ba district, nearly 20km from the district center. It is a locality with a cool temperate climate almost all year round, the terrain of some villages in the commune center is relatively flat.
Implementing the policy of the province and district, right from the beginning of the 2020 - 2025 term, the Party Committee of Tung Vai commune has identified crop restructuring as a key and breakthrough task in agricultural production, increasing people's income. After 4 years of implementation, up to now, the whole commune has converted over 60 hectares of ineffective corn land to grow tomatoes, cucumbers and chili peppers in the direction of intensive and specialized cultivation associated with consumption linkage; of which, 20.5 hectares have been converted to grow tomatoes, 35.7 hectares of cucumbers, and 4.9 hectares of chili peppers. In addition, the commune has converted part of the intensive land area to grow peanuts, 231 hectares. The total production value of converted crops reaches over 46 billion VND/year.

The family of Mr. Trieu Van Minh, Pao Ma Phin village is a pioneer in converting corn-growing land to growing other crops. Since 2023, his family has invested in a drip irrigation system on an area of about 4,000 m2 to completely convert to growing tomatoes, cucumbers and winter vegetables. Mr. Minh shared: “Last winter, my family specialized in growing cabbage. Favorable weather along with a complete irrigation and nutrition system resulted in a yield of over 20 tons. Traders came to buy right at the garden at a price of 5,000 VND/kg, my family earned over 100 million VND”.
As a commune with a large forest area of 5,464 hectares, the forest coverage rate reaches 79%, so the upstream water source is abundant, suitable for developing cold-water fish farming. In 2021, Mr. Ha Phuc Tri and a number of households in Ban Thang village established the Ban Thang village Cold-water Fish Farming Cooperative with two main fish species: Sturgeon and Salmon. After 4 years of building a water supply system, filter tanks, and model ponds, the income has been generated. Mr. Tri shared: “In the past 2 years, the Cooperative has always maintained about 7,000 - 8,000 sturgeon and salmon in the pond. We import both types of fish from Sa Pa (Lao Cai) when they are only 10 days old. It takes 15 - 20 months to reach the right weight for sale (from 2 kg or more). The survival rate of sturgeon is about 70%, salmon is only 50%; therefore, the productivity is not high. However, because there is no need to worry about product output, the purchase price right at the pond is stable from 170,000 to 180,000 VND/kg, so after each batch of fish, after deducting all expenses, the Cooperative still has a profit of 300 - 400 million VND”.

With 182.7 hectares of ancient Shan Tuyet tea, fresh tea bud output reaching 67 tons, Tung Vai is among the communes with the largest tea area and output in the district. From that potential, the commune has formed a cooperative specializing in purchasing and processing products and a number of small-scale processing facilities to maintain and create regular jobs for dozens of local workers. Every year, the output of finished tea sold to the market is over 10 tons, the production value reaches nearly 2 billion VND/year. In addition to tea trees, growing cardamom under the forest canopy is also a great potential of Tung Vai commune in economic development. Currently, the whole commune has nearly 350 hectares of cardamom; of which, about 300 hectares are harvested, with an average yield of 650 kg/ha, the production value reaches nearly 6 billion VND/year.
Chairman of Tung Vai Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Trong Tung, said: In the 2020 - 2025 term, the commune has identified 28 targets for implementation in various fields; 2 breakthrough contents and 4 key programs. The lives of local people are changing every day, the quality of life is improving.
