Besides My Son Sanctuary, Chien Dan Tower and Dong Duong Buddhist Institute, Khuong My Tower (located in Tam Xuan 1 Commune, Nui Thanh District, Quang Nam) is one of the remaining Champa cultural relics with many mysteries.
The Khuong My tower relic was built in the late 9th century and early 10th century, consisting of three adjacent towers arranged along the north-south axis: the North tower, the Middle tower, and the South tower. This cluster of towers was recognized as a National Monument in 1989. The Khuong My tower cluster contains many mysteries that have yet to be discovered.
The trio of Khuong My towers have gone through many wars and harsh weather conditions but remain intact over time.
The three towers are arranged on the north-south axis, a traditional Champa tower style with a nearly square plan, the entrance facing east, the tower roof has 3 floors, the upper floor is a miniature image of the lower floor, on top is a sandstone tower spire.
On each wall there are 5 decorative wall pillars with herbal motifs rolled into consecutive S-shaped letters, interspersed with diamond-shaped decorative wall panels connecting from the base to the top of the wall.
With a lifespan of more than 1,000 years, many locations of the tower have been eroded over time.
The relief statue contains many mysteries
Many tower locations have been renovated.
Khuong My tower cluster also contains many archaeological artifacts.
The three towers of Khuong My are almost a solid block because the space inside is almost negligible. Because, the inside of most towers is just enough space for one person to perform the ceremony.
Researchers believe that the South tower was built first, the largest in the group, with a structure similar to the other two towers, but on each wall there are only 4 wall pillars.
Many delicate patterns
The Khuong My tower group has a very special structure, causing many difficulties in restoration and reconstruction.
Khuong My tower cluster contains many undiscovered mysteries.
The decorative patterns on the wall pillars and wall panels are strips of herbal patterns rolled into consecutive S-shaped letters, alternating with diamond-shaped patterns.
Cham towers are built of bricks made of clay. This unique feature has created "legends" about the construction of the towers.
What is special is that through archaeological excavations at the foot of the tower (3-5m deep), scientists have discovered many decorative stone slabs, most of which are carved with images of monkeys in all positions, standing, sitting, holding drums, and breastfeeding, very funny and unique.
Pattern on wall cladding
The relief resembles a Bodhi leaf.
Temples and towers are popular and unique architectures of the Cham people. After more than 1,000 years, this trio is still "standing the test of time".
Middle Tower
The Khuong My tower cluster has been a challenging work for Champa art researchers for more than a century since its discovery.
Khuong My Tower Complex
The People's Committee of Quang Nam province has also approved the project to preserve, renovate and restore the South Tower of the Khuong My Cham Tower Relic Site, including the tower body and the East door. The arches above the doors are curved in an arc shape, decorated with stylized herbal motifs, the tips of the leaves are twisted and curved, the leaves are arranged in many layers, gradually narrowing upwards, the top of each arch is a combination of branches and leaves bent into the shape of a Bodhi leaf.
