Sunnie Nguyen's room at her homestay family's home showed no signs of forced entry after the student mysteriously disappeared in Australia.

What do Australian education authorities say?

Today (January 16) marks the 8th day that Sunnie Nguyen (17 years old, real name Nguyen Hoan Ngoc Anh) has been mysteriously missing in Australia. At present, the host family, friends and colleagues have not been able to contact the student. Local police have also tried to contact Sunnie's family in Quang Binh province for many days, but so far have had no results.

Notably, Sunnie is the fifth Vietnamese student to go missing in Australia in the past month. All of them studied at Hamilton High School (Adelaide City), each of them went missing at a different time and Sunnie's host family is not sure if there is any connection between them. Australian police are also calling on anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation.

This case has received attention not only from the public and the police but also from education agencies in Australia. Responding to 7News recently, the South Australian Department of Education confirmed that a number of Vietnamese students in this state are mysteriously missing and hoped that they would call the local police.

"This (the disappearance - PV) is worrying for all concerned and we urge students to contact the police to ensure their well-being," the South Australian Department of Education informed.

According to experts, Australia considers the safety and health of international students a top priority with many support policies from the government to the school level. For international students under 18 years old, the related regulations are even stricter to protect them, so the disappearance of 5 Vietnamese students is of particular concern to this country.

Overview of the missing Vietnamese student case

Sunnie Nguyen came to Australia to study at Hamilton High School on an exchange program in June 2023. She lives with a host family in South Plympton, a suburb of Adelaide, with two other international students. Her daily routine includes going to school, coming home for dinner, filming videos with her housemates, and occasionally working part-time at a nail salon 15 km from school.

This schedule went on normally for the past 6 months, until early January 2024. Accordingly, at around 7pm on January 8, Sunnie had dinner with the host family, then went to her room to rest. When the host family checked the room at around 11pm, she had disappeared with her backpack, laptop, some clothes and some important personal documents. The room showed no signs of a break-in and most of her belongings were still intact.

The host family then tried to contact Sunnie, but her phone was turned off and her social media accounts were deleted. Thirty minutes later, at 11:30 p.m., the host family reported the student missing to the police. Sharing with the Australian media, the host family expressed concern about Sunnie's safety, as she was said to be not good at communicating in English and had a visa that was valid for 3 years, so there was no reason for her to run away.

On January 11, Australian police revealed that Sunnie was the fifth Vietnamese student to mysteriously disappear. The incident occurred from December 2023 to present. Police also announced that the five disappearances (one of whom has been found) were unrelated and that they may have gone to another state. However, it is unclear why or how they did this.

On the same day, Sunnie's best friend also moved into her host family's house. This person is said to have no knowledge of his friend's mysterious disappearance.

According to statistics from the Australian Department of Education, 746,080 international students are studying in Australia as of September 2023. Of these, Vietnam has nearly 30,000 people, ranking 6th after China, India, Nepal, Colombia and the Philippines. To live in Australia at the present time, the Australian Department of Home Affairs advises international students to ensure finances of about 25,000 USD (600 million VND) per year.

Thanh Nien Newspaper will continue to update the latest information about the case of 5 Vietnamese students missing in Australia.
