According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters, during the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, people in An Phu district (An Giang province) are both enjoying Tet and preparing for the mango harvest season. According to some people, the selling price of mangoes has decreased compared to last year but is still high, making farmers along the border excited.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung (37 years old, living in Phu Huu commune, An Phu district, An Giang province) said that from the land where growing crops and rice did not bring economic efficiency, farmers here switched to growing mango trees.
Mr. Hung also has more than 2 hectares of land converted to growing mangoes, mainly Keo mangoes (a short name for a mango variety originating from the Ta Keo region of the Kingdom of Cambodia - PV). "Traders come to the garden to buy at a price of more than 10,000 VND/kg. With such prices, the profit earned is also several hundred million VND" - Mr. Hung shared.
According to Mr. Hung, to increase connectivity, he applied to become a member of Phu Thanh Mango Cooperative to study and improve production quality to have the opportunity to export this agricultural product.
There are also more than 1.5 hectares converted to growing mangoes, Mr. Pham Cong Minh (residing in Phu Thanh hamlet, Phu Huu commune, An Phu district, An Giang province) said: "With the current price of mangoes, farmers will earn a profit of about 50% of the selling price. Farmers here really want the participation of functional agencies and businesses so that local mangoes have the opportunity to be exported, bringing higher economic value".
Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh - Director of Phu Thanh Mango Cooperative (Phu Huu commune, An Phu district, An Giang province) - said that up to now, there are about 400 hectares of land (40 hectares) of mango growing farmers participating in Phu Thanh Mango Cooperative.
“To achieve efficiency, the cooperative is also transferring experience and processing techniques. In addition to ensuring the form and quality, the cooperative also contacts the authorities to issue codes for Phu Thanh Mango Cooperative’s growing areas to meet export standards,” said Mr. Tuan Anh.
According to Mr. Truong Chi Thong - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Phu district, in recent years, the mango growing area in An Phu district has increased, now reaching about 2,000 hectares. The conversion of ineffective land to mango growing in the area has brought economic efficiency, with profits of 60-180 million/hectare/crop, making people in the border area very excited.
