Proactively respond to peak saltwater intrusion

- Before the peak of the dry season in 2025, the Provincial People's Committee requested members of the Provincial Steering Committee for Climate Change Response - Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Civil Defense (hereinafter referred to as the Provincial Steering Committee), together with sectors and localities, to proactively develop plans to respond to saltwater intrusion, ensuring safety for production and serving people's lives.

According to the An Giang Hydrometeorological Station, in March 2025, the province is likely to experience localized heat waves in some localities: Tri Ton District, An Phu, Chau Phu, Tinh Bien Town and Tan Chau Town. From April to June 2025, the average temperature will be about 0.3 - 0.80C higher than the average of many years. Widespread heat waves will peak in April and May 2025. Meanwhile, in March 2025, due to heat convection, rain will begin to appear in some places, with total rainfall generally at approximately the same level or higher than the average of many years.

Regarding the hydrological situation, from now until June 2025, the highest water level in the Mekong River upstream area is likely to be 0.1 - 0.4m higher than the same period of the previous year; the lowest water level is 0.4 - 0.6m lower than the same period of the previous year. In particular, the salinity in the canals and ditches in the border area between An Giang and Kien Giang provinces in Thoai Son and Tri Ton districts continues to rise slowly, the highest salinity fluctuates at 0.1 - 0.2%o.

In order to proactively respond to the peak of saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta, the Provincial People's Committee requested sectors and localities to regularly check and monitor water levels in canals bordering Kien Giang province and water sources of domestic water supply plants to proactively operate water supply works reasonably. Coordinate with sectors and units of Kien Giang province to operate the irrigation system in the Long Xuyen Quadrangle, especially the sluices in the coastal area of ​​Kien Giang province to prevent salinity and store fresh water for the region.

Localities proactively regulate water resources appropriately during the peak dry season of 2025

With the departments and branches that are members of the Provincial Steering Committee, the Provincial People's Committee requests to proactively direct, coordinate, and support localities in the work of preventing, combating, and overcoming drought, exhaustion, and low water levels according to the "4 on-site" motto, ensuring continuous water supply for daily life and production during the peak of the 2025 dry season. At the same time, the Provincial People's Committee also requests the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD), An Giang Hydrometeorological Station to continue monitoring developments, providing full and timely forecasts, warnings on hydrology, water resources, salinity and the risk of drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion in the province to the media. Strengthen monitoring of information on saltwater intrusion and water source forecasts of specialized meteorological and hydrological agencies, specialized agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to provide agencies and localities in the province as a basis for organizing appropriate response solutions.

In order to ensure domestic water for people, the Provincial People's Committee requested the Center for Clean Water and Rural Environmental Sanitation to deploy a plan to prevent and combat drought and water shortages to provide domestic water for localities lacking fresh water. In particular, it is necessary to pay attention to localities such as Tri Ton District, Thoai Son District, Tinh Bien Town, to prepare plans to create public water supply points to serve people, or transport water in cases of special difficulties.

For districts bordering Kien Giang province, it is necessary to regularly monitor the water resources on rivers and canals, proactively carry out information and propaganda work so that people can proactively prevent and ensure adequate fresh water supply for daily life, not affecting people's health and serving production well. Direct the irrigation works management unit to organize the reasonable operation of sluices and reservoirs to regulate and store water in canals to create sources. Closely coordinate with related units on the same inter-provincial, inter-district and inter-commune canal axis to promptly plan dredging and opening and closing sluices according to the tide to increase water retention and regulate water distribution reasonably.

In addition, actively coordinate with specialized sectors to monitor the salinity of Kien Giang province and neighboring areas, and prepare plans for temporary dams to protect production. It is necessary to identify the risks affecting each region and area to have specific solutions, absolutely not allowing people to lack water for daily life and medical and educational facilities to lack fresh water. Strengthen propaganda, mobilization, and guidance for people on measures to store water, use water effectively to ensure daily life, as well as apply advanced and economical irrigation solutions in production. In particular, people need to regularly check water sources and take irrigation water according to large water flows from the Hau River.

For the media agencies in the province, the Provincial People's Committee requires updating information, reporting promptly and accurately on forecasts, warnings of hydrology, water resources, salinity and risks of drought, water shortage, saltwater intrusion in the province, as well as documents, directives, tasks and solutions of competent agencies so that people know and proactively deploy appropriate responses...
