After receiving the high school graduation exam results, many candidates said they are under pressure to choose their university admission wishes, especially after the Ministry of Education and Training announced that the score distribution for many combinations has slightly increased.
Trend of increasing university admission benchmark scores
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, the average score of admission subjects has increased compared to 2023 (except for the B00 combination, which has decreased slightly). This means that when candidates register for admission, the standard score at many schools will also increase compared to 2023.
"Up to this point, universities have announced their admission methods. With this score range, I predict that the floor score will increase slightly from the standard score by 1 to 3 points," said MSc. Pham Doan Nguyen, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the Council of the University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), also commented that although more and more schools are using competency assessment tests and separate exams for admission, currently, all universities still use high school graduation exam results as an important method for admission.
With the above score range, it can be seen that this year, the most common score in most groups is 22 - 23 points.
The percentage of excellent scores in this year's high school graduation exam is higher than in 2023 in all subjects.
Therefore, if there is no major change in the quota ratio for considering the results of the high school graduation exam, this year's entrance score will be higher than last year in all groups and may differ by 1 to 3 points. For "hot" majors with high entrance scores, if the quota is the same as last year, the competition will be greater.
Confused about choosing the order of wishes

Although up to this point, many candidates have received notification of eligibility for admission from training institutions, they are still wondering when choosing the order of priority for their wishes to enter different majors and universities.
When registering for admission, candidates must complete the entire process from start to finish on the system, without stopping or exiting in the middle. Stopping and exiting the system in the middle will cause the candidate's actions to not be recorded. In case they want to change their admission wishes, candidates also do the same and operate to the final steps. In previous admission seasons, some candidates adjusted and changed their wishes but did not perform to the final step, so the system did not record the change. At that time, the system returned to the previously registered wishes, meaning that they did not successfully change their admission wishes, so they may face risks. Training institutions are not allowed to request or agree with candidates to commit to or confirm early admission in any form such as: paying a deposit fee, keeping records, etc. The Ministry of Education and Training requires training institutions to absolutely not set out requirements that cause inconvenience to candidates, such as requiring them to submit or present a certificate of residence information when carrying out administrative procedures (according to Government regulations...)".

According to experts, if a candidate has been admitted early and is satisfied, then the candidate should make it their first choice. If the candidate wants a major at another school, then prioritize that major/school as their first choice and don't forget to reserve the early admission result for one choice to ensure the chance of admission.
"Candidates must pay close attention to the major they like and the combination of subjects they are considering to enter that major to see if they are suitable. Candidates should list information about the major, school, and benchmark scores in 2023 and 2022 to compare with this year's exam scores as a basis for choosing the right major.
Candidates for the 2024 High School Graduation Exam
Candidates are not limited in the number of wishes, so they can prioritize their first wish and their favorite major/school, with the basis that the benchmark is about 1.5 points higher than in 2023, 2022 and the following wishes with similar test scores, reference benchmarks, and test scores higher than the reference benchmarks of 2 years ago to ensure the opportunity to be admitted to the program", MSc. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Deputy Director of the Center for Admissions and Business Relations (University of Finance - Marketing), shared.
Regarding the arrangement of wishes, Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) noted that candidates should divide the wishes they intend to register into 3 groups, with standard scores from high to low, based on the results of the high school graduation exam and related data of the wishes they intend to register (standard scores, score distribution, quotas...).
In which, group 1 is the wishes with a standard score 1 to 3 points higher than the exam score; group 2 is the wishes with a standard score corresponding to the exam score; group 3 is the wishes 1 to 3 points lower than the exam score for backup. Candidates like the wish most and find it most suitable for their ability, then put it as wish 1, and so on until the end.
Candidates nationwide will have a period of time to research, learn information and officially register their admission wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's admission system before 5:00 p.m. on July 30, 2024. Considering the correct order of admission wishes based on expert opinions will help candidates increase their chances of being admitted according to their wishes.
This year, the entire process from registration, changing preferences, paying admission fees and confirming admission is all done online. Therefore, as long as you have a computer with an Internet connection, candidates can perform these steps anytime, anywhere.
