The new regulations on extra teaching and learning according to Circular 29/BGDĐT are explained by education managers as helping students increase their self-study. In fact, many final year students, especially 9th graders, are full of anxiety as the time for exams is only 3 months away.
Lack of confidence in self-study
Sharing her current concerns, female student Nguyen Minh Chau, a 9th grader at Nguyen Du Secondary School (Hanoi) said that Circular 29 on extra teaching and learning aims to protect students who are forced to take extra classes.
But that's just a small number. "I think that if we don't go to extra classes and have to study and revise at home, it's a disadvantage for senior students. Currently, senior students only study for half a day. We feel lost and it's hard to be confident."
Like many of her peers, what this female student wishes for is for the Ministry or Department of Education and Training to have a way to "loosen up" the ability for transfer students to continue studying and reviewing for exams inside and outside of school.
Responding to this issue, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Director of the Department of Secondary Education (Ministry of Education and Training), emphasized that the purpose of Circular 29 is to limit the widespread practice of extra teaching and learning, passive learning, ineffective learning, and wasting both time and money, while students need space and time to self-study and review the knowledge taught by teachers in class.
Furthermore, Director Nguyen Xuan Thanh also emphasized that currently, the content and scope of the 10th grade entrance exams and high school graduation exams are all within the general education program, mainly the 9th and 12th grade programs, so as long as students know how to self-study and review knowledge with the support of teachers, they can be completely confident in completing the exam.
Associate Professor Dr. Pham Manh Ha, an educational psychology expert, said that Circular 29 limits the widespread practice of extra tutoring and encourages students to self-study. However, effective self-study requires a process of training and persistent effort.
Not all students are trained and able to meet this requirement while the exam period is only 3 months away.
"Self-study does not mean disconnecting from teachers"
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh believes that students should not depend on extra classes but need to be more proactive. First of all, they need to synthesize and review the entire program they have learned in textbooks, such as types of exercises, formulas, topics, etc., from there, memorize to firmly grasp the knowledge of each subject.
"Students often ask teachers to continue teaching them, but teachers want students to continue asking teachers because no matter how much teachers teach, if students only copy a lot into their notebooks, the teaching will not be effective; what students need is knowledge in their heads, not in the notebooks they take home. Students should not ask teachers to teach them more, but need to learn more on their own," Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh emphasized.
Mr. Luu Van Thong, Principal of Dich Vong Secondary School (Hanoi), said that the regulations on extra teaching and learning apply nationwide, not just to a particular locality or school. Students should not worry too much because only by adapting and focusing on self-studying right now will they get good results.
"Self-study does not mean disconnecting from teachers. You can still connect via phone or talk to teachers at school to ask about issues you are lacking or need attention.
"To study on your own, you need to have materials, such as study sheets or test papers provided by teachers in class related to the topics you are reviewing. Students can ask teachers for advice on effective books and reference materials," said Mr. Thong.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Quy, Principal of Mac Dinh Chi High School (Hai Phong), shared: "The habit of taking extra classes will have to stop, there will certainly be disappointment, confusion, and even great difficulties.
But this is also an opportunity for students to regain their inner strength: the spirit of self-study. At first, self-study can be difficult, tiring and ineffective. But once you get used to it and become familiar with it, self-study will become a great source of strength, helping students confidently face challenges and succeed in the future."
