In 2025, more universities will use the method of considering test scores to assess capacity and thinking for admission. This increases the pressure for candidates to study when taking both the high school graduation exam and separate exams.
Admission based on the results of separate exams is becoming a trend as more and more schools organize these exams with hundreds of schools using the same results and tens of thousands of candidates participating.
It is noted that in 2025, many universities will continue to organize their own exams with the expectation of expanding the scale of enrollment. The separate exams are also being planned by higher education institutions to be more innovative in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program.
This year, the first round of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam was held on March 30 in 25 provinces and cities. From January 20 to February 20, the school opened the registration portal for the first round of the 2025 competency assessment exam.
According to the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment (Ho Chi Minh City National University), the number of candidates registered up to now is 130,489. The deadline for paying the exam fee is February 23, so the number of candidates officially registered for the exam is expected to increase.
In 2025, the structure of the competency assessment test has been adjusted to match the 2018 General Education Program. The test consists of 120 multiple-choice objective questions with 150 minutes to complete and is conducted on paper.
Hanoi University of Science and Technology is the first unit to launch the thinking assessment exam in the 2025 admission season. The first round of the exam was held on January 18 and 19 in 13 provinces and cities with 6,891 candidates taking the exam.
The Hanoi University of Science and Technology Thinking Assessment exam has been reduced by 3 sessions compared to last year. The remaining two sessions will take place on March 8 and 9 and April 26 and 27.
Speaking to reporters, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien - Deputy Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that although the number of exam sessions has decreased, the number of exam teams for each session has increased, so the number of candidates expected to take the exam will increase compared to 2024.
Currently, more than 50 higher education institutions use the results of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology Thinking Assessment exam for admission.
This year's Hanoi National University's aptitude tests will take place from March 15 to May 18. Candidates can start registering for the tests from February 23.
The Hanoi National University Examination Center said that the new point in the structure of the 2025 capacity assessment exam will be to add cluster questions in all exam sections and exam topics.
Notably, from the 2025 admission season, 12th graders will have another way to apply for admission to teacher training colleges when Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 recently announced a project to organize an independent exam for admission in 2025. This is the third teacher training college to have its own exam, after Hanoi Pedagogical University and Ho Chi Minh City Pedagogical University.
The school organizes 8 subjects, including: Literature, Math, English, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography. The content of the exam closely follows the 2018 General Education Program (GEP), mainly for grade 12. The exam is expected to be held in June.
In the face of university admission trends, many candidates choose to take aptitude and thinking tests to increase their chances of getting into university. However, this admission method is also creating pressure on candidates and their families.
Besides reviewing for the upcoming high school graduation exam, many candidates are focusing on practicing for the competency assessment exam, including those who plan to take many different exams.
After completing the first round of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology thinking assessment exam, Nguyen Linh Chi, a 12th grade student at Bac Kan High School for the Gifted (Bac Kan), said: "After the first round, I will focus on reviewing my weak points to improve in the second round. This is my official exam."
Nguyen Gia Tri, a 12th grade student at Nguyen Trai High School (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi) said he chose to take the Hanoi National University's aptitude test to increase his chances of being admitted to university.
To prepare for the first round of this exam in March, Tri said: “I spent a lot of time reviewing the question format and exam structure as the reference exam that the school has announced. In addition to self-studying, I have just registered to participate in exam preparation at an online exam preparation center. While reviewing for the high school graduation exam and worrying about the ability assessment exam, I am under a lot of pressure but I will try my best to increase my chances of getting into university.”
Regarding candidates choosing to review for the competency assessment exam at exam preparation centers, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Testing Center - organizing the competency assessment exam of Hanoi National University, noted that candidates need to study seriously and diligently in each lesson, each test hour and familiarize themselves with the reference exam questions of the competency assessment exam. If they study well the entire high school program, it will be much more effective than randomly reviewing for the exam at the centers.
To support candidates in reviewing and preparing for this exam, Hanoi National University has published a guidebook for the competency assessment exam. This is the first and only official document compiled by the Testing Center to support students in self-study, reviewing and effectively preparing for the competency assessment exam.
Although many universities use the results of competency and thinking assessment tests for admission, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien noted that depending on the admission regulations, each school converts the exam scores into different scoring scales. Therefore, candidates should carefully research the information during the application process.
