According to Ha Tinh newspaper , in the past month, the price of piglets has skyrocketed to 2.5 - 2.9 million VND/pig (6 - 10 kg/pig), depending on the farm and region, up nearly 1.5 times compared to the same period in 2024. Specifically, 3-blood piglets for meat are priced at 2.7 - 2.9 million VND/pig, 2-blood piglets for meat are priced at 2.5 - 2.6 million VND/pig.
According to livestock farms, the demand for herd restoration after Tet is increasing sharply because the price of live pigs is high. Meanwhile, the low supply of piglets is the main reason for the high price of piglets.
Minh Loc General Livestock and Construction Cooperative (Cam Minh, Cam Xuyen) is maintaining a herd of nearly 300 sows. However, the cooperative only exports a small number of piglets to the provincial market, the rest are used for pig farming on the farm. The farm currently sells piglets for about 2.6 - 2.7 million VND/pig.
At this time, many farmers and businesses are stepping up herd restoration activities to serve the market. However, the high price of piglets is causing many difficulties for farmers in terms of initial production costs.
According to the recommendations of the Department of Crop Production and Livestock Husbandry, the high prices of piglets and animal feed, high costs of disease prevention, and risks of diseases such as African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, etc. will increase production costs. In that context, farmers should carefully consider the process of herd restoration and strengthen biosecurity to limit the spread of diseases that cause damage.
In the Southern region
The southern live pig market is also not outside the general downward price trend, with common decreases ranging from VND 2,000 to VND 5,000/kg.
Provinces like Ca Mau have the lowest decrease of 2,000 VND/kg, with the price of 79,000 VND/kg.
Many localities such as Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Long An, Dong Thap, Tien Giang and Ben Tre recorded the highest decrease of VND5,000/kg, with the price of live pigs stable at VND77,000/kg.
The remaining provinces such as An Giang, Vinh Long, Can Tho, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Bac Lieu, Tra Vinh and Soc Trang have a decrease of 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg, with prices fluctuating around 78,000 VND/kg.
