(NLDO) - The Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Science and Technology have a new name after the merger, the Ministry of Science and Technology and Communications, covering the fields and having the resonance and synergy of the two ministries, namely technology.


On the morning of December 29, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) held a conference to review the work in 2024 and deploy tasks for 2025.

Speaking at the conference, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung said that 5 years ago, IT application was popular, digital transformation was very new. "Because it is new, the spirit of daring to explore is the most important, whoever dares to explore will lead" - he said.

The past 5 years have been a journey in which the IT industry has both worked and explored, bringing Vietnam into the group of countries with the fastest growth in digital economy, e-commerce, digital transformation... in the world.

According to the United Nations' 2024 E-Government Development Index (EGDI), Vietnam has risen to 71st place out of 193 countries, up 15 places compared to 2022. This is the first time Vietnam has been ranked in the very high EGDI group and has the highest ranking since it began participating in the United Nations' EGDI assessment in 2003.

In Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranks 5th out of 11 countries in e-Government, up 1 place compared to 2022.

In September 2024, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) also announced the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), according to which Vietnam has increased 8 places since the report published in 2021, rising to 17th place out of 194 countries and territories worldwide, 4th in the Asia-Pacific region and 3rd among countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the field of cybersecurity.

Vietnam achieved almost perfect scores for the five assessment criteria of the GCI and was ranked as a "model" level 1 country (the highest level of 5 levels), a group of "exemplary" countries, and in the top 3 groups of leading countries in the world.

In November 2024, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) announced the integrated index of postal development in Vietnam, accordingly, Vietnam Post in 2024 was ranked higher from group 6 (in 2023) to group 8.

In 2024, the total revenue of the IT industry is estimated to reach VND 4,243,984 billion, an increase of 13.2% compared to 2023. The contribution to the state budget is estimated at VND 109,478 billion, an increase of 15.1% compared to 2023. The contribution to GDP of the IT industry is estimated at VND 989,016 billion, an increase of 11.2% compared to 2023. The total number of employees in the IT industry is estimated at about 1,542,994, an increase of 02% compared to 2023.

Technology is the common point of the two ministries.

In 2025, the country will enter a new era. The Minister of Information and Communications emphasized that digital infrastructure, digital technology and digital industry must go first and go faster.

According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, the merger of the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) must find common ground to gain strength.

The Ministry of Science and Technology manages technology development in general, the Ministry of Information and Communications manages information technology, digital technology is the technology, the foundation for other industries and fields. Digital technology is the most dynamic and important technology today.

According to the Minister, technology is the common point that creates synergy between the two Ministries. The new name of the two Ministries after the merger is the Ministry of Science, Technology and Information Technology, which both covers the fields of the two Ministries and shows the resonance and synergy between the two Ministries, which is technology.

Technology development is mainly in enterprises. Over 50 thousand digital technology enterprises under the management of the Ministry of Information and Communications will now have faster access to scientific and technological research of the Ministry of Science and Technology, bringing science and technology closer to enterprises, and faster bringing scientific and technological results into products serving life.

"The merger of the two Ministries into a new Ministry is very important and large for the country" - Minister Nguyen Manh Hung emphasized.

In particular, the Politburo has just issued Resolution 57 dated December 22, 2024 on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation. Therefore, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung stated that the newly merged Ministry is the core force to realize this extremely important Resolution.
