The provincial People's Court has just held a first-instance criminal trial against 28 defendants (residing in Ea Sup district) for the crime of forest destruction. Thereby, 20 defendants were sentenced to between 2 and 6 years in prison; 5 defendants were sentenced to 3 years of suspended imprisonment; one defendant was sentenced to 3 years of non-custodial reform; 2 defendants were sentenced to 2 years of non-custodial reform.
According to the indictment, from April 1 to 7, 2022, the Inspection Team coordinated by the Provincial Forest Protection Department and the Forest Protection Department of Region IV inspected the destroyed forest area in Ya To Mot commune (Ea Sup district).

Thereby, it was determined that the forest area destroyed was very large in sub-zone 222 and sub-zone 205 (managed by the People's Committee of Ya To Mot commune). Because the incident had signs of crime, the Investigation Police Agency - Provincial Police Department investigated and initiated a criminal case on the act of destroying the forest.
During the investigation and examination of the scene, the Investigation Agency determined that 449.25 hectares of forest were destroyed. Of these, 4 groups of 28 subjects (all residing in Ea Sup district) were identified who directly entered sub-area 205, using chainsaws and knives to destroy nearly 16 hectares of forest, causing damage of more than 72.5 million VND. During the investigation, the subjects confessed to all their crimes.
As for the remaining destroyed forest area (out of a total of 449.25 hectares), the subjects and responsibilities of related organizations and individuals have not been identified, so the Investigation Police Agency - Provincial Police is continuing to investigate and clarify to handle according to legal regulations.
