Part 4: Adding green to the friendship garden

Following in the heroic footsteps of their fathers in history, contributing to building a more prosperous life for their compatriots, generations of soldiers in green uniforms at the border gates in the Central Highlands region have persistently fostered the solidarity and close relationship between the three countries of Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia.

Border diplomacy work is realized by soldiers at the frontline through large-scale, meaningful activities and programs, helping us understand our friends and our friends understand us to join hands in managing and protecting the border. Friendship is also strengthened with all our hearts, enthusiasm, and willingness to support each other, through many gestures and actions like relatives in the big Indochina family.

Officers and soldiers of the Bo Y International Border Gate Border Guard Station perform a ceremony to salute the border marker at the border junction area.

Love and affection by the Dak Rue river

According to the plan of July, Dak Rue Border Guard Station (Dak Lak Provincial Border Guard) and O Ro Police Station (Kingdom of Cambodia) organized regular meetings and information on the situation right at border marker No. 42. Closing the exchanges on border inspection, the atmosphere was very close and happy when the officers and soldiers of the two stations sometimes spoke Vietnamese, sometimes Khmer. They warmly asked each other about the health, work and education of their wives and children back home. The officers and soldiers of the other stations, one happily talked about his gentle wife who worked as a teacher, the other proudly showed off that his wife was very good at business.

Major Trinh Van Cuong, Deputy Chief of Dak Rue Border Guard Station, gave his friend some coffee packages with a strong basalt flavor and some medicine to treat stomachache. Holding the hand of the soldier of the other station, his voice was warm and affectionate: "This season the rain and sun are erratic, it is easy to get sick, so please bring some medicine just in case. And this is a specialty coffee of the Central Highlands, we are very happy that you also love it!"

Major Trinh Van Cuong (standing in the middle) , Deputy Chief of Dak Rue Border Guard Station, presented coffee and medicine to officers and soldiers of the neighboring station.

The Dak Rue soldiers started the friendship footprints with simple gestures and actions like that. Major Nguyen Quy Sang, Deputy Chief of Dak Rue Border Guard Station, said that the unit was stationed only about 1 km from O Ro Police Station. Meanwhile, the neighboring unit was 50 km away from the residential area by forest road, so whenever they could support or help, the Dak Lak border guards did not hesitate to go through hardships.

Knowing that you have no well and have to use stream water despite the muddy rain and floods, the unit has coordinated to help you drill a well. In the past 4 years, the O Ro Police Station and Squad 2 (Mondulkiri Provincial Military Command, Kingdom of Cambodia) have had electricity from Vietnam's electricity network. You call it the light of friendship. When you need food support, the Dak Rue Border Guard Station is always willing to share and help.

Most importantly, saving people is like putting out a fire. The station has sent medical staff countless times to visit and examine, going through many long journeys to help you overcome the critical stage of a serious illness.

One night at the end of 2022, the Dak Rue Border Guard Station received news that Captain Chum Soc Nin, Chief of the O Ro Police Station, was seriously ill. Upon receiving the order, the unit's medical staff immediately went through the forest to be present. At that time, Captain Chum Soc Nin had a stiff jaw, difficulty speaking, weak limbs, and loss of strength. Discovering that his friend had signs of a stroke, the unit notified superiors, quickly provided first aid, and transported the patient to the Military-Civilian Medical Station of the 737th National Defense Economic Group for treatment.

During the days of his serious illness until his recovery, the medical soldiers of the Station attentively supported him with food, daily activities, and took care of him wholeheartedly like family members. This kindness was not only this time, because a few years ago, Captain Chum Soc Nin also suffered from severe pneumonia and was cared for by a soldier in a green uniform at a hospital in Dak Lak province for a whole month.

There, the three-border landmark...

Kon Tum province has a border of over 292 km with 96 landmarks, of which in the area managed and protected by the Bo Y International Border Post, there is a very special landmark - the border junction landmark. This sacred place is located at an altitude of 1,086 m, bordering the provinces of Kon Tum (Vietnam), Attapeu (Laos), Ratanakiri (Cambodia) and is often compared to a rooster crowing that all three countries can hear.

And also here, the friendship of the three Indochinese countries was deeply engraved, especially when the border junction marker was inaugurated in January 2008. The leaders of the foreign ministries of the three countries at that time, together with the leaders and people of the three provinces sharing the border, attended in joy and happiness. In August of the same year, the Governments of Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia agreed to sign the Treaty defining the border intersection between the three countries.

Many political events have taken place at this sacred place, including annual exchanges, working sessions, greetings to the border markers and joint patrols between the three countries' border protection forces. In November 2018, the border marker location was bustling with the Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia Border Friendship Exchange program. In a series of meaningful activities, representatives of the three countries planted a friendship garden with about 700 trees, including: rosewood, green star, purple lagerstroemia, acacia, magnolia, and champa...

This year, the three sides have been discussing and agreeing on the plan and content of the organization, and at the same time, preparing in all aspects to organize the Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia Border Defense Friendship Exchange program in the coming time. With meticulous preparation, the program will further strengthen and consolidate the relationship between the army, local authorities and people of the three Indochinese countries.

Lieutenant Colonel Hoang Xuan Han, Political Commissar of the Bo Y International Border Gate Border Guard Station, affirmed that the border junction is a clear symbol of solidarity and friendship between Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia, demonstrating the will, aspiration and determination of the Government and people of the three countries to build a peaceful, friendly and stable border in the long term. This is not only of special importance in terms of national defense - security and foreign affairs, but also a tourist attraction with educational significance about patriotism and the sense of responsibility of citizens in participating in protecting the integrity of the national border sovereignty.

Build for the future

Le Thanh international border gate (Gia Lai province) on a day in July, the drizzle of the highlands did not dampen the excitement of immigration, import and export activities and traffic between the two sides of the border. This is an important gateway connecting the Central Highlands provinces, the South Central Coast with the northeastern provinces of Cambodia and southern Laos.

Together with other functional agencies performing tasks at the border gate, officers of the Le Thanh International Border Gate Border Guard Station undertake many tasks such as checking and controlling people, vehicles and import and export goods; fighting and preventing all types of crimes, ensuring security and order in the area.

In the first 6 months of 2023 alone, at this border gate, there were 19,261 people entering the country, 19,442 people exiting the country; 4,384 vehicles entering the country, 4,421 vehicles exiting the country; 35,914.108 tons of imported goods and 30,619.225 tons of exported goods...

While waiting in line to complete immigration procedures, Ms. Srey Neang (Ratanakiri Province, Kingdom of Cambodia) said: She and her family often register to go to Gia Lai Province Hospital for medical examination and treatment. When visiting Vietnam, she and her relatives always receive enthusiastic support, advice and treatment, so for many years now, her family has always felt secure in choosing Gia Lai Province Hospital as the address for health care.

Further fostering the close friendship, in recent years, the Vietnam Border Guard has also adopted and sponsored disadvantaged students from neighboring countries. At the Le Thanh International Border Guard Station, among the 7 students supported by the "Helping You Go to School" unit, there is the case of Kpuih Kenh (born in 2009), from O Gia Dao district (Ratanakiri province, Cambodia). Kpuih Kenh is an orphan, so her living conditions are extremely difficult. To encourage her, over the past 6 years, the unit has regularly visited, provided financial support, given gifts, and accompanied this young student to overcome difficulties, study well, and be a good student.

Having completed the ferry trip to transport a disadvantaged student from a neighboring country to finish grade 12, recently, the Border Guard Station of Bo Y International Border Gate (Kon Tum Border Guard) continued to sponsor another child. That is In Keo Leng Xay (born 2011), in Xan Xay district (Attapeu province, Laos). Loving and cherishing In Keo Leng Xay like a family member, right from the time of sponsoring, the unit met, discussed, and listened to the family's thoughts and wishes. Not only providing cash support, preparing for the new year 2023 - 2024, the soldiers also had additional gifts to encourage and give him more strength to go to school.

There, along the Dak Rue River, the three-border milestone, Le Thanh and Bo Y border gates, etc., the green shoots of friendship continue to sprout, constantly develop and grow as proof of the everlasting solidarity and attachment between the three Indochinese countries.
