Since the beginning of May, shipyards in Hai Phong have successfully launched three large ships. For the first time in the past 15 years, Hai Phong - the cradle of Vietnam's shipbuilding industry - has witnessed three large ships launching in just 13 days. Along with that are a series of new shipbuilding projects for domestic and foreign partners, while developing previously signed cooperation into expanded shipbuilding projects with more ships, instead of the initial cooperation agreements to build a fixed number of new ships...
Dozens of large ships waiting to go to sea
On the 69th anniversary of Hai Phong's liberation (May 13), Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company safely launched the 13,000-ton oil/chemical tanker named BS Hai Phong with design code YN-01 built for a Korean partner. This is the first in a series of 8 oil/chemical tankers with design codes from YN-01 to YN08 officially launched.

Mr. Vu Huu Chien, General Director of Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company informed : The unit and the partner ( YENTEC Company ) agreed to name the ship BS Hai Phong, choosing the exact day of Hai Phong's liberation to organize the launching ceremony, meaning the connection between Hai Phong and Korea. Also at the launching ceremony, Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company organized the launch of the YN-02 ship and signed a contract to build a new ship with the design code YN-08. Mr. Vu Huu Chien added that this series of 8 13,000-ton ships is an expansion of the initial 5-ship construction project plus 3 more ships, when Pha Rung Shipbuilding proved its conditions, qualifications and capabilities to the Korean partner.
In early May 2024, after many years of operating at a standstill, Bach Dang Shipbuilding Company successfully launched a 17,500-ton ship with design code SS-12 named Truong An Ship, newly built for the shipowner Minh Thang Transport Trading Company Limited. Notably, on the afternoon of May 10, 2024, for the first time in the history of Vietnamese shipbuilding, a 65,000-ton ship named Truong Minh Dream 01 was successfully launched by Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Company Limited, marking a great step forward for Vietnamese shipbuilding enterprises. That was also the day of laying the KY of the second 65,000-ton ship for its partner, Dong Bac Shipbuilding Industry Joint Stock Company...
Not only 3 large ships were put into the water in May 2024, but also a series of orders for the construction of new ships, up to dozens of ships, showing new developments in the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry in general and the Hai Phong shipbuilding industry in particular. According to the representative of YENTEC Company ( Korea ), the signing of the contract to build 8 new YN ships is the 3rd time the company has chosen Pha Rung as a shipbuilding location because of the ability to build high-quality ships and closely follow the progress of this unit. Mr. Nguyen Van Chi, Director of Dong Bac Shipbuilding Industry Joint Stock Company, said that the putting into the water of the Truong Minh Dream 01 ship on schedule and officially placing the KY of the second 65,000-ton ship demonstrates the trust, ability to cooperate and develop together between businesses.

Create conditions for new opportunities
According to the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC) , the shipping industry is in the process of innovation, in which many shipping enterprises are gradually replacing and " rejuvenating " the fleet, which is a new opportunity for the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry. This is demonstrated by many orders for new transport ships for shipbuilding enterprises. The Hai Phong shipbuilding industry - the cradle of the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry - is facing great opportunities in the process of finding partners and developing new orders to return to its inherent position and " form ". Instead of building small ships, now large ships of up to tens of thousands of tons, bearing the Hai Phong brand, are gradually reaching out to the open sea from the hands of talented and experienced shipbuilders.
With the series of new ships being built in the future, it affirms the strength and strong development and growth of the Hai Phong shipbuilding industry, helping shipbuilding enterprises have stable jobs for a long time. In particular, with the construction of a series of 8 oil and chemical tankers with the symbol YN, Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company will stabilize jobs until 2027. Completing Truong Minh Dream 01 ship and building new ship 02 will also create jobs for Nam Trieu shipyard workers until the end of 2026... However, for the Hai Phong shipbuilding industry to develop and welcome new opportunities, enterprises should not only rely on existing orders but also promote new orders, attract more high-quality workers, and expand production scale. According to Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Duc Tho , shipbuilding enterprises in Hai Phong all have a long tradition, a lot of experience, and master high-quality shipbuilding technology. To develop sustainably and long-term, in addition to solidarity, consensus, and improving management capacity, businesses must always proactively seek new partners.
With the successes up to now, Hai Phong shipbuilding industry is gradually developing and gradually exploiting its inherent potential of tradition, experience and taking the lead, absorbing new technology. To seize new opportunities, shipbuilding enterprises are increasingly looking for customers, partners, and creating operating capital. Shipbuilding requires a huge amount of capital, while the effects of Vinashin in the past have not been resolved, causing many shipbuilding enterprises to still struggle with production capital. This is also a difficulty that requires the support of relevant levels and sectors to overcome.
