While checking new student information with Hong Kong authorities, Macau University of Science and Technology (China) suspected that 24 students had falsified their Hong Kong Secondary School Leaving Examination (HKDSE) results to enroll. The school immediately reported the incident to the Macau Education and Youth Development Bureau in accordance with regulations.
Tsai Ruo-lian, the Hong Kong Education Bureau's secretary, told the Global Times on November 21 that she had received a request from the school to verify the HKDSE results of some new students. After checking, the Hong Kong Examinations Council confirmed that 24 freshmen from various departments of the Macau University of Science and Technology had used fake HKDSE results to enter university.
With the above conclusion of the Director of the Hong Kong Education Bureau, Macau University of Science and Technology affirmed: "The school always strictly follows the relevant instructions of the Macau Education and Youth Development Bureau in admissions. Therefore, candidates who cheat, falsify information and violate academic ethics are forced to leave school and will be prosecuted and held legally responsible."
According to regional media, of the 24 new students who used fake HKDSE exam results to apply to Macau University of Science and Technology, 4 are being detained by Hong Kong (China) police for investigation, the rest have fled.
Regarding the incident, a representative of the Hong Kong police affirmed that they will protect the integrity and reputation of higher education to the end and will not tolerate cases of falsifying information and degrees. Mr. Lee Ka-Chiu - Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, also said that the act of providing false information or degrees is a violation of the law and needs to be strictly suppressed.
In October, a mainland student was sentenced to 17 weeks in prison for using a fake bachelor's degree from Cornell University (USA) to apply for a Master's degree in Finance at the University of Hong Kong. In early November, the Education University of Hong Kong also promptly discovered a case of using a fake transcript to register for a master's degree. The female student was later sentenced to 3 months in prison for intentional deception.
Currently, after a series of incidents of students using fake scores and degrees to apply for university and graduate school, the Macau Education and Youth Development Bureau has established a mechanism to link with regional agencies to strengthen cooperation and avoid similar incidents from happening again.
The Hong Kong Secondary School Leaving Examination (HKDSE) is held annually, with flexible timings from mid-February to early May, and results announced in July are used for university admissions. Currently, Macau (China) has 10 universities that accept students' HKDSE results for admissions.
