Agricultural product prices on March 9, 2025: Coffee and pepper both decreased slightly

At the London exchange, at 5:00 a.m. on March 11, 2025, at the end of the trading session, Robusta coffee prices recorded an increase of 22 - 25 USD/ton, ranging from 5,122 - 5,475 USD/ton. On the New York Stock Exchange, the price of Arabica coffee on the morning of March 11, 2025 fluctuated between terms, ranging from 351.25 to 391.60 cents/lb. The specific prices are as follows: the contract for delivery in May 2025 closed at 384.00 cents/lb, the contract for delivery in July 2025 reached 374.70 cents/lb, the contract for delivery in September 2025 traded at 365.65 cents/lb, while the contract for delivery in December 2025 reached 354.15 cents/lb.

Similarly, the price of Brazilian Arabica coffee also fluctuated slightly by term, ranging from 453.50 - 475.00 USD/ton. Specifically, the March 2025 contract recorded a price of 475.00 USD/ton, the May 2025 contract was at 474.70 USD/ton, the July 2025 contract reached 471.15 USD/ton, while the September 2025 term was priced at 456.05 USD/ton.

At 5:00 a.m. this morning, March 11, 2025, domestic coffee prices in the Central Highlands region adjusted up again after the previous decrease, the increase ranged from 1,000 - 1,200 VND/kg, raising the average purchase price to 130,900 VND/kg.

Specifically, today's coffee price in Dak Lak reached 131,800 VND/kg, in Lam Dong it was 130,000 VND/kg, in Gia Lai it was 130,800 VND/kg, while Dak Nong traded at 131,000 VND/kg.

In Dak Lak, Mr. Hoang Doanh Huu, CEO of Miss Ede Coffee Company, commented that the sharp increase in coffee prices over the past two years is putting pressure on processing enterprises. While domestic raw material prices have increased by more than 300%, the price of finished products cannot increase correspondingly due to limited market purchasing power, causing many enterprises to face difficulties.

According to Mr. Huu, although the company has adjusted retail prices, the increase can only be limited to 20% compared to the time before the price of raw materials increased. This is considered a major barrier, directly affecting the ability of businesses to maintain profits when input costs continue to escalate.

Not only coffee, many other key agricultural products in Dak Lak such as durian and pepper have also recorded an increase of 150 - 250% in the past two years. However, this situation has put export enterprises in a difficult position, as they have to compete fiercely in purchasing raw materials to ensure the implementation of previously signed contracts.

In this context, consumers tend to tighten their spending, forcing domestic roasters to find ways to adapt to rising raw material prices. The risk of low-quality products appearing to maintain reasonable prices is also a concern.

Pepper price decreased sharply

At 5:00 a.m. on March 11, 2025, domestic pepper prices suddenly dropped sharply, losing 2,000 - 2,700 VND/kg compared to the previous session. Currently, the average price in key areas is 157,900 VND/kg.

Specifically, pepper price in Gia Lai decreased by 2,000 VND/kg, bringing the purchasing price in this locality down to 157,000 VND/kg.

In Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Phuoc, pepper prices also decreased by VND 2,000/kg, currently at VND 157,000/kg.

In Dak Lak, pepper prices also decreased following the general trend, down 2,000 VND/kg, currently at 159,000 VND/kg.

Particularly in Dak Nong, pepper prices decreased the most by 2,700 VND/kg, currently trading at 159,300 VND/kg.

According to the update from the International Pepper Community (IPC) at 5:00 a.m. on March 11, 2025, the world pepper market generally remained stable, with no fluctuations compared to the previous session. However, pepper prices in Brazil recorded a slight increase after a long period of stability.

Specifically, IPC announced that the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper is currently at 7,376 USD/ton, while the price of Muntok white pepper is trading at 10,242 USD/ton.

Malaysian pepper market remained stable after increasing in the previous session, with Malaysian ASTA black pepper price reaching USD 9,800/ton and ASTA white pepper trading at USD 12,300/ton.

Meanwhile, pepper prices in Brazil increased slightly after a long period of no change, currently reaching 6,900 USD/ton.

In the Vietnamese market, pepper export prices are stable with a slight upward trend. Specifically, black pepper of 500 g/l is trading at 7,000 USD/ton, 550 g/l is at 7,200 USD/ton, while white pepper is priced at 10,000 USD/ton.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), there are currently about 200 enterprises operating in the pepper processing and trading sector nationwide, of which the 15 largest companies account for 70% of total export output. The Vietnamese pepper industry owns 14 deep processing factories, with the participation of 5 foreign enterprises, controlling nearly 30% of the export market share.

Vietnam's pepper processing technology now meets the standards of major global markets. Many businesses have invested heavily in modern factories, complying with international standards such as ASTA, ESA, JSSA, helping to diversify products, from black pepper, whole white pepper to ground pepper and small packaged pepper, meeting international market demand.
