At this time, high schools have been organizing final exams for students at the end of the first semester. Many parents complain that their children are taking semester exams but the stress and pressure are no different from the 10th grade entrance exam or high school graduation exam.
Many parents said that their children study very late at night, going to bed at 1 or 2 am and waking up at 6 am to go to school. Walking on the street, it is easy to see students dozing off behind their parents. Some children even take the opportunity to eat sticky rice or bread but their eyes are still glued to the outline in their hands.
Students are in the final exam period of semester 1.
Currently, students are studying two different programs, in which grades 5, 9 and 12 still follow the old program. Even though students are studying two programs, they are still under pressure during exams for a number of different reasons:
Firstly , teachers, students and parents still confuse between tests and exams, which is one of the reasons why periodic tests become heavy and stressful. Periodic tests include mid-term and final tests - not exams.
Legal documents such as Circular 58, Circular 26, Circular 22 only stipulate types of tests: regular tests, periodic tests. For high school students, there are 2 main exams, which are the 10th grade entrance exam and the high school graduation exam.
In addition, there are some competitions and contests that are competitive in terms of rankings such as: cultural competitions for excellent students, science and technology competitions, storytelling competitions, art competitions, sports competitions, etc. These competitions and contests are completely voluntary for students and only those with the ability can participate.
Second , the 2018 General Education Program focuses on learners, maximizing the role of learners. This leads to the consequence that students are overloaded with learning and under great pressure in testing and evaluation.
It is worth mentioning that the new program, which is oriented towards developing students' qualities and abilities with 5 main qualities and 10 core abilities that need to be developed, also makes students have to work hard to study and take tests according to regulations.
For example, the current testing and evaluation of 9th grade students only revolves around a few works that have been studied. However, for 10th and 11th graders, they are required to apply their knowledge of literature to analyze and evaluate the theme and art of poems using materials outside of the textbook.
Third , the number of tests required by the Ministry of Education and Training has decreased significantly compared to before, but still puts pressure on students in terms of scores, that is, assessment results. For example, the previous literature test score had 3-4 columns with coefficient 2, but now there is only 1, forcing students to try very hard to get high scores.
According to the new program, grade 10 literature has 4 columns of regular tests and assessments (coefficient 1); 1 column of mid-term tests (coefficient 2) and 1 column of final tests (coefficient 3). Therefore, mid-term and final tests have a great influence on students' learning outcomes.
In addition, the school's division of examination rooms according to registration numbers and mixing students from different classes together also increases the pressure on students. Not to mention, the examination room usually has 24 students, 2 exam supervisors, 1 hallway supervisor, and an exam inspector, which also affects the stress of students.
Students in grades 10 and 11 are studying the 2018 General Education Program
Fourthly , in theory, testing in general schools is carried out after each educational stage to evaluate students' learning and training results and the level of completion of learning tasks according to the subject program and educational activities prescribed in the General Education Program prescribed by the Minister of Education and Training.
However, teaching practice shows that currently, final year students (grades 9 and 12) are under a lot of pressure before periodic exams. Many high schools often give test questions with the same difficulty level as exams to help students get used to the pressure of exams and also as a way to tighten their learning into order.
Along with that, the pressure that high school students are under in exams is largely due to parents and schools placing too much importance on scores. Parents want their children to get good scores so they can be proud and hopeful, while schools are ultimately driven by the disease of achievement.
To help reduce pressure and stress for students, teachers and parents need to understand that testing and assessment are essentially very normal activities in teaching and learning in general schools - completely different from exams, which have high and low rankings, pass or fail.
Schools and families need to stop chasing after achievements. Don't force students to be ranked as good or excellent because each student has different abilities. Students will enjoy doing what they love, and the same goes for studying.
Parents need to encourage and motivate their children to take time to rest, play, and entertain, especially to exercise after stressful hours of studying at school. When children are re-energized, their learning will be more effective, and every day at school will be a happy day.
