Teachers and administrators shared with Thanh Nien Online their views on the fact that 'teachers at school work from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. whether they have classes or not'.

The article "Teachers must work at school from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., right or wrong?" posted by Thanh Nien Online on March 9 attracted many interested readers' opinions. Some said that it is reasonable for teachers to work during office hours to take better care of students, while many others said that it should be based on actual work efficiency and not on specific hours.

Teaching and research work of teachers is specific.

Reader Binh Hoang thinks that we should not impose a fixed time frame that requires teachers to work from morning to afternoon at school. This reader gives the reason: "A long time ago, there was a time when the Ministry of Education stipulated that teachers must work 8 hours a day at school, but after a short time, it was immediately removed because it was ineffective and caused a lot of trouble for teachers and the school board in management. Teachers' teaching and research work is special, so it is not necessary to work 8 hours a day. Nowadays, with high technology, why do we have to sit together to discuss and exchange ideas? Now there are jobs that can be done anywhere, as long as there is a computer and wifi."

MrLucabarazi account gave his opinion: "It's wrong to have 23 periods a week but have to work from 7:30 to 16:30. It's obvious that teachers have to do all their work, and if they don't do their job well, there are rules/regulations."

The article on Thanh Nien Online received many perspectives on 'teachers at school work from 7:30 to 16:30 whether there are classes or not'

The reader using the account name New Reader expressed the opinion that there should not be a rigid rule that teachers must be at school working from 7:30 to 16:30, teachers should be allowed to teach until the end of the lesson and then go home, as long as the work is completed.

Sharing the same opinion, reader with account 25270 shared: "Personally, I think that time does not necessarily have to be too strict. What is important is teaching effectiveness. If you stay at school for 4 hours and your students are still good, then there is no problem. In the case of having to stay for 8 hours, it is still not wrong because you are paid for 8 hours a day."

Primary school teachers can work from morning to afternoon at school, but high school teachers do not need to.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Thao, a history teacher at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City, said that in her opinion, primary school teachers are different from high school teachers. Because primary school homeroom teachers are usually responsible for teaching most of the subjects in a class, accompanying the children all day, except for some lessons in arts, physical education and skills, and foreign languages. However, these lessons do not take up much time, so teachers can rest during the time these subjects take place. During this time, teachers can take care of themselves, take care of family matters and improve their qualifications, go out to communicate and learn, which are also necessary and complementary to career orientation and development as well as carrying out educational tasks.

According to Ms. Thao, it would be reasonable for teachers to stay at school all day during office hours to keep up with the children, but on the condition that their salaries must ensure their livelihood.

"Currently, primary school teachers' salaries are not high, and they have many concurrent jobs, so it would be a disadvantage if teachers were required to accompany their children all day long. It is necessary to calculate additional periods at school during the process of performing tasks and responsibilities for teachers in a satisfactory manner so that both sides can reach consensus. For example, the school always has teachers to promptly inform and handle problems that arise when children have incidents or unexpected events. Children are cared for, closely cared for by teachers, and promptly educated and supported. However, when working conditions and salaries are not as good as in non-public schools, it will be difficult for teachers to feel secure and agree when teachers are required to accompany their children all day at school. Finland is a country that can do this, we should look at how this country implements educational policies to see that the teaching profession with high salaries and a good working environment allows teachers to feel secure in carrying out their mission," Ms. Thao added.

According to Ms. Thao, currently at primary schools with boarding schools, teachers who participate in boarding management services are paid an additional monthly allowance, which is added to the monthly salary that teachers receive, so it is reasonable for teachers to stay at school to work from morning to afternoon.

As for high school teachers, teachers who teach by period, it is not necessary for teachers to sit and work at school from 7:30 to 16:30, unless the school has a subject room and assigns teachers to be on duty to support students when needed. However, currently in many places there are no subject rooms to be on duty as above.

According to many people, it is unnecessary for high school teachers to stay at school from morning to afternoon when there are no classes.

Ms. Phuong Thu (teacher's name has been changed), a homeroom teacher at a primary school in Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, said that for homeroom teachers at primary level, not only do they teach, prepare lessons, prepare learning materials, study to improve their expertise, and complete paperwork, but she also supports the organization and boarding services for students during lunch and nap time (with additional allowances, paid monthly with salary). Therefore, she is often present and works at the school from 7am to 5pm to handle books, grade notebooks for students, and finds the above working hours reasonable. "Resolution 08 on paying additional income to Ho Chi Minh City civil servants is a motivation for the teaching staff to strive to complete the assigned work excellently and effectively," she said.

Management messages and strategies are very important.

Responding to Thanh Nien Online , a manager at the Department of Education and Training of a district in Ho Chi Minh City told the story of the principal encouraging teachers to work from 7:30 to 16:30 to complete all school work, take good care of slow-learning students, exchange expertise directly with colleagues, take care of family matters at home, rest with positive goals, aiming for the humanistic meaning of being for the students. This can be an agreement, labor regulations in each collective, aiming for the highest goal of work efficiency. However, when a school manager sets out a regulation, there needs to be a clear message and way to spread the message to convince the team, why it must be done like that, what goal does it achieve, how to measure work efficiency, if the goal is achieved, what values will be gained, how will it be recognized...?

At the same time, according to this Department of Education and Training official, the principal can start by encouraging some key staff with good working capacity and inspiration. They will set an example of focusing on work at school and supporting their team through activities such as exchanging lectures, training and knowledge development... Gradually, when seeing the effectiveness, this will be spread more widely throughout the entire team. And of course, schools also need to pay attention to facilities, desks, chairs, network systems... to serve the work of teachers.

"In reality, in many non-public schools, in addition to working 8 hours or more per day at school, every Saturday the teaching staff also gathers at school for professional training, and teachers are all proactive and self-motivated to participate. The important thing is that they see the effectiveness, and this learning is truly beneficial, bringing real value," he said.
